Character Name: Sandor Clegane (also known as the Hound)
Character Series: A Song of Ice and Fire
Character Age: About 29
Background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Song_of_Ice_and_Fire
Personality:

Sandor Clegane is driven by hate. His only wish is to see his brother dead by his own hands. He can be cruel, thinking nothing of running down innocent thirteen-year-old boys on orders. Yet, although he likes killing, he is only as cruel as he needs to be. He is not sadistic, unlike his hated older brother. His approach to life is ruthless and pragmatic, valuing strength above all else. He believes that if people can't protect themselves, then they should "die and get out of the way of those who can." (However, he will break this code sometimes, as detailed below.) At the core, Clegane is a survivalist. If he needs to lie, steal, or kill to stay alive at the end of the day, he'll do it and lose no sleep over it.

He's known as the Hound both for his ferocity and his obedience to his masters. He would rather be called "dog" than "ser" (his world's term for knights), since he likes dogs a whole lot better than knights, due to the hypocrisy of knighthood. The Hound is feared throughout the realm for his swordsmanship and his cruelty. He doesn't care about seeking atonement for the sins he's committed. Although he doesn't mind being hated -- plenty of people hate him, and he's well used to it -- he does care about not being a monster. Again, this ties into his hatred of his brother, for his brother is a monster and a knight, and he wants to be everything that his brother is not. The burns on his face, inflicted upon him by his brother when he was a child, have greatly shaped how he views the world. Most people are terrified by them and do not look at his face, and he has experienced the depths to which people are willing to judge him simply due to his burns, deepening his cynicism.

He is brutally honest. He sees the hate and ugliness in the world for what it is, and he has become as hateful and ugly to survive. He hates liars. He hates hypocrisy. Never having loved nor been loved, he's emotionally stunted. The one time he felt something gentler than apathy or hatred towards another, he didn't know what to do with that feeling. He's very conflicted inside, although he tends to push aside that conflict and not worry about it. He drinks to forget about the pain. He has a very dark and morbid sense of humor, fitting with his dark and morbid outlook on life. Although he enjoys fighting and killing and drinking, nothing truly brings him joy.

When he was a child, he had dreams of being a knight and had idealistic hopes and dreams. His brother, five years older, had a toy knight that he had no use for, and the six-year-old Sandor desperately wanted this toy. When he finally worked up the nerve to play with it, his brother shoved his face onto a brazier, and it took three grown men to drag his brother off of him. That was the moment his face was burned and his idealism shattered. Eventually, he saw his sadistic, evil brother take his knightly vows, and that only cemented the hypocrisy of the entire institution. However, part of him is still drawn to idealism, though he does not recognize that. Due to his own experiences, he wants both to rid the innocent of his/her blindness to the truth and to simply be part of that idealism he once had, so long ago.

Still, he is not a villain. In truth, he is more an anti-hero. Despite his words and his outlook on life, he is one of the few characters in the novels to actually protect those weaker than him. For example, he seemingly rides back into danger to save a girl because her ransom would grant him much money. However, while the ransom provided incentive, he seems to have gained respect for her and saved her for her own sake, though initially she hates him for it. Though he may be cruel and brutal, he has a sort of decency of his own left within him.

Abilities: One of the best fighters in his homeland.

Notes: He'll be coming in with his facial scars. The left side of his face is badly burnt -- it's pretty terrible to look upon. (It's the right in some of the icons, since they flipped it around for the TV show.) This was okayed by the mods already.
