I've been a big fan of the whole Stargate shebang. There's a good deal of clever plotting in the show, where they go back and use resources they encountered in earlier episodes. Mostly, though, the characters really grew on me. I recommend trying to get at least through Season Two. If you're not clicking with the characters by then, then maybe move on to something else.

How is Netflix for British shows? Spaced, Black Books, Being Human...)

I second being human, sg1, and the middle of ds9. Also depending on what you are looking for and have or have not already seen Battle Star Galactica (or just a few eps of the original to see the differences and laugh) and Eureka. For less Scifi, I'd recommend Castle with Nathan Fillion and White Collar.

I second the suggestion for Castle, which is clever and fun. How about the animated series, The Venture Brothers? It's a dark parody of Johnny Quest, and I find it to be very funny. Also, if you haven't seen Firefly, then that is a must. I rather liked DS9, so that would certainly be worth watching. I also have a fondness for the short-lived, Earth 2, which alternated between brilliant and incredibly cheesey. Enjoy!

Well, I own Firefly...

I skipped most of early Castle so that might be good. Also, I remember hearing about Earth 2 but don't think I ever gave it a chance.

StarGate! I watched some of it in season, and then we sat and watched all of it in a rush before the next season started. Seeing them all in a row let us see how good the writers were at following up on their own details. I highly recommend all of them.

If you didn't catch all of BattleStar Gallactica, I recommend that as well.
