Everything was nothing. There was nothing. There couldn't be anything. Her hands shook so hard she couldn't pull at the vest around her chest. Her knees wobbled and banged together. Her head felt light as air.
There was nothing. No immediate thoughts. No words. No tears.
And the goddamn vest wouldn't come off. She pulled at it and pulled at it.
"Please," she murmured. "Just get off.." Her eyes were flooded, hot, but the tears wouldn't fall. Her shaking hands fell from the vest in defeat. Her knees couldn't hold her up any longer and she fell back against the row of lockers, quickly sliding down to the floor. Nothing worked. One leg out, one leg folded. Her vest. Her fingers. She held them up, but were they really there?
She brought her fingers to her face, slowly pushing them down against her skin. Drawing lines down her face softly. His touch wasn't there anymore.
It never would be again.
And she broke. The tears fell over her cheeks without cause to let up, and sobs started to break her body back against the lockers. There was so much pain inside of her chest that she wasn't sure it would ever stop.
At a bar not so very far away, friends and co-workers were somberly raising a glass to Don Flack, Jr. Fallen hero. But Lindsay Monroe sat alone on that floor, aching for a man no one knew had been hers.
