Name: Temperance "Bones" Brennan
Fandom: Bones (TV)
Gender: Female
Age: 34.
Time Period: S06E14 - The Bikini In The Soup
Wing Color: Dark red.
History:
Temperance "Bones" Brennan.
Personality: Bones is described as “almost having
Asperger Syndrome” by her actor (Emily Deschanel) and the creator of the show (Hart Hanson). And as such, she seems hard to approach, coming off very detached and almost stoic. Though, since the beginning of the series, she has come very far, as she is more personable and approachable, even going so far as to take a term that
Seeley Booth uses for her team and use it her to describe them (Even though she found it highly offensive in the earlier episodes), Squints.
She claims that she didn't own a TV for the longest time, but as of season six, she does (As in an episode, she watches Jersey Shore and thinks it's a Documentary on “Guidos”).
She is a self-professed Atheist, causing many arguments between herself and her partner Booth, who is an devout Catholic. As such, she does not believe in things that she does not find solid evidence of (Love was a major one, it caused UST between her and Booth for most of season 1 through 5, and when she managed to admit to herself to take a chance with Booth in season 6, she was shot down as he was dating Hannah at the time).
She does not claim herself to be a gambler and as such, she does not take many risks, fearing she may get hurt on by accident. By the time she was ready to take a chance on Booth he was already in a relationship with Hannah and was told that "Hannah was not a consolation price" and that he loves Hannah, to which she says; "I lost my chance". But this does not stop her from trying to keep her friendship with Hannah though Booth tells her about Brennan's confession.
She does believe that Teachers are the ones who should be "praised" instead of authors, actors and music artists, thought she acknowledges that it's not as so. She also does not believe in psychology. Though she does become friends with Lance Sweets (A FBI pyschologist assigned to Booth and Bones after Booth arrests her father.) despite it. They do still have friction between them, even so (One case would be when she tells Sweets he simply guessed at something and it did hurt his feelings). They bond over the fact that they both were abused as children in one episode.
Bones cares deeply for her other teammates, including Booth. Angela, being her best friend, is pregnant and feels comfortable naming Brennan the child's aunt and giving the child the name "Temperance" in name of Brennan. Temperance was Angela's "maid of honor" at the almost-wedding.
Zack Addy and Bone's relationship were of almost parent-child sort of thing, even with the baring that Zack was used as an accessory to murder and had joined the
Gormogon Serial Killer. She shows remorse for it.
Her past is a very touchy thing, her parents were bank robbers and then left her brother and her, which put her in an abusive foster home (she does bond with Lance Sweets over this) and she grew up in a small town. Her high school years weren't much better, but she had one friend that she adored completely, the Janitor. (S05E17)
She spent a lot of time believing both her parents were dead, though it was proved differently when it came to light that Max Brennan wasn't actually dead and she does end up solving her mothers' murder. Her relationship with Max was not the best for the longest time, though she does end up helping him avoid going to jail for murder by putting suspicion on herself, causing reasonable doubt in the case. Her relationship improves with her father and brother quite a bit during the seasons.
She is terrified of being left behind, this attributed to the fact to her parents leaving and then Russ following after. She is also fiercely afraid of snakes, this one is shown when Booth needs to carry her because she was so afraid (though, she admits to Sweets' girlfriend that she was more afraid because Booth was there to save her.)
She's stoic and analytical due to her childhood, where not only did her parents and brother left her... she was shunned by her peers and considered a "nerd" or a "weirdo", she really did not have any other friends besides the Janitor until she left the small town. This is shown to accumulate from the fact that she could not find it in herself to relate to the teenagers her own age. She was overtly smarter than them and thus, they perceived her as weird, as different. Some felt like she was mostly talking down to them and that she didn't think they were equals in the slightest. Thus, she formed a friendly relationship with the janitor, who she could not only relate too, she could also talk to on a somewhat level playing field.
This is perhaps the reason why she's so independent, as having no one to fall back on, but herself, left her feeling she had to make up for the loss by proving to herself and others that she could take care of herself. Thus, giving her a somewhat naivety to the fact that the woman is a trouble-magnet and drives most people around her absolutely insane because she really does not get that being alone in dangerous places could get her killed.
Her growth is spotted through the series, she becomes able to let people into her life beyond them being faces she sees at work. Her relation to Zack Addy is a big point, she did see much of herself in Zack, and took to him in a way much akin to a parent and child. She believed in him much until the end, where it was proved that Zack was an accomplice to the Gormogon.
As with Booth, Bones realizes that he is someone she could fall back upon, as in the Jungle when she is terrified of the snakes and demands him to carry her. Subconsciously, Bones no undoubtedly believes that even if she does get into trouble, that Booth will be there to save her, as she even admitted to Daisy that she was more scared due to Booth being there and being able to save her.
Her connection with Booth does run extremely deep. Not only does she find that he is part of the reason that she is changing, she also basks in it. She shows extreme anger at Sweets for keeping the fact that Booth did not die (even though Booth told him that she should be notified that they staged his death) after he takes a bullet meant for her. This is shown as she was in an extreme mourning state from the time he "died" until the time he was proven alive. At first, she lashes out at him, feeling extremely betrayed by Booth, until she learns that it was Sweets who kept it from her.
This is the point in time where Bones perhaps realizes that she let her opportunity rush by, but when Booth is magically all right, healed and most importantly, alive; her instinctive reaction is to get angry at him for making her feel like she lost her best friend, partner and most importantly, someone she could feel something more for. She then lashes out at Sweets, because it twists the feeling of betrayal to him and thus making the feeling that she was forced to feel something more than she ever wanted too. (Sweets also says he wanted to see how she reacted to Booth's death, which leads her to responding even angrier towards him.)
The case with Booth's faked death, she felt jipped, almost like he left her behind. This was her feeling like she was given a glimpse of something extremely important to her, before having it ripped away. She had someone who she could relate to and felt like he just left her behind. Even though she knows that everyone else was still around, it still felt like there was a big hole missing in her life.
She does not react this much when she comes to realize that Zack was aiding the Gormogon, because she does see that he honestly believed in the flawed logic that he was given. She does feel extreme sadness, as the episode ends with them going through Zack's things. When they come to Zack's letter of acceptance as her grad-student, she realizes that he cared about how she perceived him by the end. She reacts by accepting the letter and realizing that the people around her aren't just faces.
She did at one point assume that everyone around her were just people she was around for work, mostly due to the fact that she did not see the point in interacting with others for any other reason than just that. Her relationship with Booth does change how she does see it, her banter with him starts off extremely hostile, before slowly fizzling out into charged, but friendly banter.
At the beginning, she has a hard time talking with Booth, mostly because she assumed that since he was strong, jock-like, bully-ish and more of a shoot-first type of person, he would not be much help on any of the cases they have together. Her independence was extremely important to her during this time, it shows that while she was surrounded by people she thought that the only person she actually needed was herself, though she comes to realize that is not the actuality.
Bones believes in a black and white sense of justice, despite being an Atheist, anthropologist and analytical. But she didn't believe in love or monogamy (though she comes to realize that polygamy does cause problems in this day and age), but she absolutely refuses to allow evidence to lie, even for a bluff. One notable example were when she and Booth were extremely frustrated with a killer who had diplomatic immunity, she refused to let Cam keep a file that made it look like the killer's son had done it, in order to procure a confession (something Booth agreed with).
She does test people -- even going so far, earlier on in the series, to forget names she didn't want to remember, even if they have met repeatedly, only giving them that "privilege" if they were useful. As such, she didn't find herself wanting in the least to help Jude the Science Dude, because she believed that he was "pandering" and not at all "helping" the science field, thus she believed that he was useless and she did not like him for simply that reason.
Despite being extremely stubborn, when she makes an mistake and can be found to be just plain wrong, she owns up to it. Admitting that she is such. She really does not like it shoved in her face, but she can scientifically recognize that she was in fact, wrong, even though it is extremely rare. This usually happens in her relationships with people, where she realizes that emotional intimacy isn't as scary as she first decides it seems to be -- Such as when she decides that she made a mistake in turning Booth down.
But Bones does man up and take it some times, she does it with Jude and does come to see them on level playing fields and accepts to do his show after much coaxing from Angela.
She wants to be a good Aunt for Angela's child, thus she allows Angela to coax her into doing the show, as at any time she could've said no and not have done it, yet she still allows herself to do it.
Even though she says she doesn't know it, she is extremely good with children (Like with a baby, her idea of baby talk is "Phalanges! Phalanges, dancing phalanges!") and Parker (Booth's son) adores her. She does show the want to be able to impress the youth and slowly bring them to having a thirst for learning that she believes everyone should have.
She's extremely confident in her skills and intelligence, and well aware that she is the brightest and best. Though, her cockiness comes into play when she assumes other should be privileged to work with her. Booth tried explaining what the draw a "Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp" would be, he asked her what sort of "Anthropology Rockstars" she would want to meet if she went to a camp about Anthropology. She responds that she would want to meet herself, though knowing it was cocky and quite self-assured in saying such (On a test that the FBI gave her, she tells them a number range on the color frequency ("Something in the 520 to 720 nanometer range.") instead of a plain out "every color but indigo and purple").
She flexes her mental superiority repeatedly, confusing bystanders and her friends. Her inept social skills -- which manages to alienate others -- stems from the need for her to show that she is smarter, does not make her want to be excluded from wanting to join in on the fun that others have around her. Even though she does not avoid tender subjects, is tactless, does not use common sense before asking people inappropriate questions and brutally honest to the point where some would stop and then some. (During her high school reunion, school mates were sharing funny anecdotes and Bones tries to jump into the conversation and tells a mortifying store about one of the girls she did not get along with. Bones did not see what the problem was when the others stared at her funny as she assumed she was completely funny, though Booth tried to explain that it wasn't funny at all and just embarrassing and the girl huffed saying that Bones was still as clueless as ever.)
Her confidence is simply not just in her work, it's also in her outward appearance. She knows she has a "desirable bone structure" and it is how she rates the attractiveness of her peers and potential mates. She finds it morally wrong for cosmetic surgery and does not get why people want to interfere with the natural bone structure that they have. It hits harder to her, because she feel that it's erasing their identity. This links back to her abandonment issues and that if someone cannot be identified, then she was not only putting them to "rest", that they lost their own identity, then what is left of them? This is her moral driving point in discovering old bones and figuring out what happened to the person.
(1)She is a writer of mystery novels as well, and even though she insisted to reviewers and critics that the books were about the forensics and not the relationships of the characters, she realizes that much of the draw to the books were just that and not what she originally thought they would be. She has enough fans that she does end up getting quite a few stalkers/fans, she thinks they are harmless; yet Booth ends up being frustrated with how she does not get scared by the fact that there ARE people who would kill for more of her books.
Her personal relationships are in the books she writes, and part of this is why she values Angela so much for helping her through the writing and why she takes her opinions on relationships more seriously than anyone elses.
She clicks with Angela even though she is very much an opposite of her, because of Angela's ability to read her and express what Brennan tries to say in her own words and make everything sound so much more real. Angela is her best friend for many reasons, but most of all, it'd because Angela can get her almost as well as Booth can (Even though Booth says that she's extremely hard to get).
Bones knows anthropology and even though she does not understand most other people, Booth is one of the few people she does understand. She imagines the reason why Booth likes to be called "Shrimp" by his Grandfather is mostly because of the fact that it makes Booth feel safe and is almost envious of the fact that she did not have that same luxury (in a way that she did not have a Grandparent to save her from the abuse).
Though her father and brother do come back into her life, Bones still holds some minor resentment due to them disappearing on her. At first, she completely shuns her father for letting her mother die and leaving her and Russ behind, but she does slowly open up and allow herself to show affection to them, even spending Christmas with him while Max was incarcerated.
Strengths:
-Some strengths of Temperance Brennan is that she exceedingly smart in a book-smarts sort of way, as she is not only at the top of her chosen profession (anthropology), she knows many different languages (some being French, Latin, German, Chinese, Spanish, though she does say she knows the word "skull" in almost every language).
-She has a hunting license in a few states and knows at least three different types of Martial Arts. Showing that she is very proficient with guns and knows how to defend herself.
-Being highly analytical helps her dissect a problem put in front of her fast, and a keen eye with a slight perfectionist attitude towards her work makes her go over what she is provided with, repeatedly. She does this so she can figure out exactly what the bones are telling her.
Weaknesses:
-Brennan has an ability to come off cold and unfeeling, due to her extreme analytical and cynical view of the world. She is described as highly rational by the rest of the cast.
-She appears hard to approach to some people and often comes off as “cocky” and highly prideful of her work, making her seem all the more “untouchable” to other characters.
-She is highly more “book smart” than “street smart” as she has very poor personable skills with most people she meets (A constant reminder of this is that whenever Booth manages to make a pop culture reference and she responds with “I don't know what that means”).
-She mixes up words and phrases, sometimes thinking that some phrases are even meant in a completely different way, usually taking them literately more often than not.
-She sometimes allows cases to hit close to home, due to her relating to it. A very big reminder of this is S06E09; "The Doctor In The Photo".
-Brennan is very much a person who enjoys things remaining the same, she is against sudden changes, as it was a factor that made her decline Booth in jumping to the next level of their relationship. She affirms constantly that she does not enjoy taking risks, though she DOES end up taking one in S06E09, showing that she's growing, but it does still seem that she is very much against change.
-She also has an independence streak the size of the sun, she highly believes that she should be able to do everything herself, and early on, it was a big problem as she did not see the point in relying on Booth when it was needed. Again, in S06E09, she simply wanders into the streets, trying to solve the case she was so attached to. Just to figure it out, but she was alone. She does slowly get over some parts of this, realizing that she does sometimes need help and that her friends were there for just that.
- She lacks a distinct ability to know what's dangerous. She finds that when she does go into something "dangerous" others are over reacting and she tries to point out that she is all right and that it wasn't all dangerous like they thought. Like the point where she does not know why telling someone guilty that "I know what you did" could get her killed, which leads to a mob hit. Or when she wanders out into the street in a seedy part of the town that she could also be killed, it leads to Booth fretting over her constantly.

My name is Dr. Temperance Brennan, I am an anthropologist. I just arrived and I have a few questions I would like to ask.
Firstly, would anyone mind allowing me to examine at their wings? I promise you I will not harm them, I simply want to take in what bones they are constructed using. Through skin and feathers, of course. I would do this sort of thing to my own, but it would be almost nigh impossible to get the data I would like for this sort of thing.
Secondly, would there be any place where I could go to find any of the dead or get scalpels/medical equipment?
And thirdly, would someone explain to me what the purpose of this place is? I assume everything is free as I watched some people interact and there was no exchange of money, please correct me if I'm mistaken.
Thank you.

[There is a bowl of indescribable slop in front of her, she does not understand what this is. But.] What is this. [She pokes it with her spoon] Was this once supposed to be oatmeal? [More poking, she makes a noise of disgust and Bones looks around rapidly, then back down to the bowl of "food"] This look disgusting, how could anyone eat it? I assume the texture is all but there. I assume it's fine, other people are eating it. But what is it? [She's quietly muttering something,] Oatmeal, gruel, mushed up bread in water... [She pokes it again.] This is simply disgusting. [She gets up from her seat and looks around.] Excuse me? Is there anyone here who can tell me who cooked this? I need to ask them what this is and if they need help learning not to do this to food.
Third Person:
She never put much stock in what Booth called an 'angel', but she was definitely sure, that if she had died, she would most definitely not be surrounded by just that. Angels. Women and men with wings on their backs, different colors, some telling in various ways. The black wings showed a darkness, she was sure he would tell he that they were fallen... But what about the other ones? Green, yellow, blue, red... every color that there could be. It took her breath away, they were all different, everyone was different.
The scientist in her cried out, telling her that she must be hallucinating, that this wasn't heaven, this couldn't be heaven. That was beyond all logic, there was absolutely no god, there was no proof! Yet still, the anthropologist in her told her to seek out an angels who would let her touch them lightly, figure out the bone structure behind them, how they worked, and if they had any possible flight compatibilities. She would then need to find a decomposed skeleton of one and see how they were composed, take them apart, clean them, figure out what their purpose really was.
Wide eyes watched with an almost childlike gaze, watching those people move passed her and mingle with the others. She couldn't help the fascination, or the urge to stop someone and ask them if she could examine their wings. Not to mention, the fact that Booth was right. And that all those fundamentalists that were wrong, if she was here, if this was heaven, then... God didn't care. At all. Everyone was free to be here, perhaps even those who had killed (she decided it was a possible downside) others.
She almost completely forgot the fact that if this was heaven, if she was dead, that left her friends and family behind. They were most likely mourning her, it hit her like a sinking ship, all color draining from her.
She left them behind, Angela, Hodgins, Cam, Sweets, Clark, Russ, her father... Booth.
So soon, she couldn't have died, and they were still waiting for her to be at work in the morning no doubt. Booth and her had done Valentines just last week--
Her chest just hurt, heart breaking. She had meant to help, but now-- A soft swear came out from the woman's mouth.
She was the worst partner ever.
