Character Age: Never stated in canon, but it is assumed to be at least a hundred years or so
Background:
Touhou Wiki Personality: Meiling is the very model of a well-rounded youkai. This is not just a comment on her combat technique, but also in how she acts in her everyday life. She is incredibly human-like in this regard, having little in the way of arrogance, and being easy to approach. Meiling will chat up anyone who approaches her, provided they are not just trying to sneak by her.
Her primary duty is as the first line of defense against intruders upon Mistress Remilia's domain -- the self-professed "Great Wall" of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. While she is dedicated to this job, it is tireless, and Meiling herself is... not. It projects the false image that Meiling is lazy, just because she has been caught napping at her post one-too-many times. It isn't that she is such a slacker, but rather that the job is not all that engaging. This often matters little to others, and she is often called out on this happening, particularly as she takes this siesta promptly at noon every day.
From there, her other duties include watching over and maintaining the garden of the SDM. It allows her some respite from her post, and she often takes the time to find a nice sunny spot where she can practice her Tai Chi Chuan. Though it does provide her some excitement, as well, such as the incident where someone had drawn crop-circles in the flowers, and it was her job to fix that mistake despite not knowing how it happened.
Meiling is straightforward and blunt, but not callous. It isn't that she wants to harm others with her words, or distance herself from people, but rather that she sees things rather two-dimensionally. If she has an opinion, she'll state it! She is a very poor liar, but she can muster up something if it will help comfort someone, or protect them somehow. Usually she sticks to trying to distract them from the matter at hand, though, or put a positive spin on it. Meiling is ever the optimist, and is slow to concede defeat, both figuratively and literally.
Finally, Meiling is not overly proud, but she does like to try to carry herself with some confidence in herself and her abilities. Especially when it comes to things she knows she can do well, such as training or dueling, gardening, or when it comes to her Chinese heritage. Hong Meiling's name, when broken down, is "Hong -- a two-headed rainbow dragon in Chinese mythology" and "mei ling -- a common given name". The outfit she is most often seen in bears a resemblance to a traditional cheongsam, and the golden star on her forehead bears the character for "long", which means "dragon". She looks up to dragons; most notably the history and myths surrounding them. It just so happens that dragons make up the highest order of gods in Gensokyo.
Abilities: Meiling does not have many abilities that distinguish her from a human, despite her youkai lineage and age, except her skill at manipulating her ki and channel it into her attacks. She is dedicated to her particular style of martial arts, and her techniques are well-rounded which grants her no particular offensive or defensive advantage. Beyond that, she has nowhere near as many danmaku or spell cards as some of the other youkai in the Touhou universe, choosing instead to fight hand-to-hand with the aid of ki attacks whenever possible.

Okay, children, line up please! [ It was time for another session of Meiling's Perfect Gym Class! She smiled down at the young ones, waiting patiently for them to gather before her. ] How're you all doing today? Do you feel good? [ A few children cheered. That just won't do. She pumped a fist into the air, putting a bit more of her excitement into her question. ] Are you ready to have fun?
[ More cheered, and louder, and or or two pumped their fists into the air. Much better, she thought. It wouldn't be enough if the children didn't actually get into it. ] Great! Fitness is an important part of your health, in both mind and body. [ The class groaned. ] Now, now, I know I say this every time, but it's true! Just look at me.
[ She strikes a dramatic pose, looking very heroic despite being in an evergreen jogging suit, and lacking any actual glow of power around her. ] Take it from me, boys and girls, there is no better feeling than knowing you are in tip-top shape. You'll feel like you can accomplish anything!
[ Dropping the stance, she bows forward and claps her hands together. ] But enough of that! Who wants to help set up the equipment? I need at least two volunteers-- [ No hands went up. Time to sweeten the pot. ] --and volunteers get to skip doing laps while setting up. [ Almost everyone's hands went up. Meiling grinned a bit.
This was more like it~ ]
