I had to go to work today. People are killing each other left and right and it was like nothing was different at school. [ Meiling's characteristic carefree nature is absent from her tone. There are people who care, but you must remember that most of the people seen are not what you could consider as normal. They will see nothing wrong with this, and may not even be aware it's happening. As for those who have embraced this barbaric display, they are not the kind who would care beyond themselves or those they feel are important to them.

I didn't mean just the drones. [ Meiling should have been more clear. ] Aren't they worried about the consequences?

They are blind, or more... unsure no doubt. I fear there are those who are simply jaded in this place as well.

But... I have every intention of educating everyone once I am capable of doing so again.

-Patchy had come for her second letter. What she had found was Meiling continuing to be defiant. Her anger was palpable.-

Step aside, gatekeeper.

[ Meiling looked to the wizard and tried not to pity her. She still in awe of how this ordeal had warped her friend's attitude. ] Are you coming home? I don't have supper made, but I can do that in a hurry! [ It's an act, and a desperate attempt at that. All she wants is her Patchouli back, not this -- whoever this was. ]

I said step aside. If you do not obey, gatekeeper, I will be forced to remove you from my sight. -And as if to accent her point, several glyphs begin to form around her.-

[ Her brows were creased, and her optimistic tone vanished. Her voice was quiet, pleading, but she did not move save to reach her hands out. ] Miss Patchouli, please. Don't do this...

The town prizes routine above all else. Even if people are dying, the sanitized, mechanical rituals have to continue.

There's nothing routine about this. [ So that doesn't make sense to her. ]

Something new and usually horrifying happens about once a month or so. The true torture of this place is that it deadens your reactions to these kind of things.

I know humans can be cruel, even to each other, but I don't think I'll ever get used to things like this. I don't want to.

Meiling?

[He sounds tired, but he's glad she's alright.]

Mm, it's me. [ She tries to muster up some enthusiasm, but it's difficult. ] It's good to hear from you.

Same. Are you alright?

I'm... [ Not really okay. ] I'll be alright. My friend is having a hard time, but I'll talk to her later.

Do you know what would happen to those that show they care? How worried they are?

...no? [ But she'll listen. ]

They make it more obvious that they're easy targets. Several expressed their care over the phone lines when this first started. I wonder how many are still alive now?

Not everyone who wants to avoid fighting is an automatic "easy target".
