Testing. Testing. TESTING

Name: Daphne Louise Greengrass
Birthday: October 13th, 1980
House: Slytherin
Blood: Halfblood (with four generations of careful breeding, Daphne's brother may produce the first 'Greengrass purebloods' in over 100 years)
Classes: Muggle Studies, Ancient Runes, Transfiguration, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts
Appearance: Daphne is unremarkable in many ways, but none as much as the way that she looks. With mousy brown hair that never really curls or stays straight -- it 'flops,' dull brown eyes that are liveliest when she scowls, and her short stature, people often neglect to notice the quiet Slytherin girl. She tends to wear her hair pulled back by an alice band (in dark green, brown, or black), and her other accessories are just as muted and and quiet as she is -- except for her earrings. Daphne has a collection of unique and sparkling earbobs that she has collected over the years. Her family knows what to get her for holidays, and she has 'gathered' and modified jewelry from unsuspecting students over the years to create her own unique pieces.

She stands at only five foot four, and is easily overshadowed by her peers in Slytherin house. Daphne is often content to stand in Pansy's shadow, and she has groomed her expressions to show a spectacular brand of apathy unless, of course, the ringleader of her dorm lets out a loud laugh. Daphne isn't thin, but she isn't fat, and is glad to be away from either spectrum.

Personality: Daphne has been one of the quietest Slytherins in her year. Her rather boring track record at Hogwarts might cause many to have forgotten who she is. She never tries to strike out on her own and to make enemies or forge friendships. Instead, Daphne allows her ringleader to call the shots and follows along with her apathetic expressions. Her apparent lack of exuberance or leadership potential is not absent due to natural inclination, but more to a large sense of inadequacy. Daphne is not the purest, not the most beautiful, not the most intelligent, not the most imaginative, artistic, humorous, etc. She has never felt a drive to do anything in her life, and has viewed her time at Hogwarts as 'just the way to get to your 18th year,' as her mother would lovingly tell her.

As it is with many shy people, there is a lot going under Daphne's cool and apathetic surface. She has never been caught or even accused of her strongest personal vice -- the enjoyment that she garners from stealing the belongings of others. She never takes anything large or especially valuable (unless she knows that they would not miss it). Daphne enjoys these quiet, unremarkable triumphs. She doesn't brag about any of them -- not even when she steals things from Luna Lovegood like the rest of Hogwarts.

Almost completely pessimistic, Daphne still keeps most of her downer comments to herself unless she knows that they will be welcomed by the gang of girls that she runs with (and her friend Tracey? Runcorn? possibility).

Daphne finds it much easier to mock the actions of others than to try to do anything out of the ordinary. She sometimes has urges to make mayhem or to disturb the system that Pansy has developed, but often suppresses that by nicking a barrette she'd never wear.

Although Daphne does not have any flamboyant dreams about her future, she did purposefully take the N.E.W.T.s required for Curse Breaking at Gringott's. She doesn't know that she'll actually do it. Her parents would rather she stay in England, but a growing part of Daphne thinks that moving to Egypt might be an interesting thing to do, and that it might be worth the difficulty of leaving her home to try something new. She wonders what life would be like with a completely new group.

HISTORY: Daphne was the second child of Leander and Artemisia Greengrass, two halfbloods who tried to style themselves off families like the Malfoys. Leander worked at St. Mugo's as the Head Healer for a ward.

Her brother Kenneth was born five years before the Greengrasses tried for another child. The two parents were constantly doting on little Ken, and they were hoping for another loud and brawny son when Daphne made her way into the world. Leander, disappointed that they had had a girl instead of a boy, was half hearted in his attentions to Daphne. Artemisia did what she could, but she was often so taken up with education her eldest that Daphne learned to be quiet in her crib and wait until her mother had enough time for her.

Lydia was born just as Daphne was learning how to walk, and as Kenny was now more self sufficient and the baby completely helpless, Daphne was yet again left in the lurch. No one noticed her say her first word (they realized she was saying both 'Mama' 'Dada' and 'Kee' a week after she had been speaking), and her first steps were greeted with a tired smile from her mother who had to start warding the house again.

As a young child, Daphne was given praise by her mother for her quieter nature. She was often the easiest child of the three, and she never asked for much. Artemisia used to joke with her friends that caring for Daphne was like caring for a house plant. As long as she was watered and had a bit of sun and wasn't pulled or prodded, she grew without complaints.

Artemisia was always working to get her children in the social circles of the others. Daphne was introduced to Draco Malfoy, Pansy Parkinson, Theodore Nott, Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, OTHER HOUSE PUREBLOODS? as a child. She never did much at these 'play dates' and tended to observe, but that was enough for Artemisia who hoped that her daughter would marry one of them and make an excellent match. It didn't matter that many of the parents of Daphne's 'playmates' had been under suspicion for Death Eater activity.

Kenny -- or Kenneth, as he went by at Hogwarts --had been sorted into Slytherin. Even though Daphne wasn't the best of friends with her brother, she did hope that she could be in his house. Her parents had both been in Slytherin and it seemed to be the Greengrass way to go. It was her desire to protect herself and the yet unkindled passion to prove herself that caused the Sorting Hat to move her into Slytherin.

Daphne drifted along her years at Hogwarts. Her mother, whom she writes with at least monthly, constantly reminded her that it was only seven years and then she'd be done, so to make friends, enjoy herself, and not work too hard. Daphne followed her mother's advice the best she could.

She can still remember the bitter taste of defeat when Neville Longbottom managed to wrangle the House Championship from Slytherin. Though Daphne had done nothing to win points that year, she still belonged to the house and it was Slytherin's turn to win. She didn't like Harry Potter -- mostly because her friends didn't like him.

When the Chamber of Secrets opened, Daphne did not feel nearly as much panic as the rest of the school did. House Slytherin wasn't a good home for Muggleborns, and so practically everyone in the house felt safe.

With third year came the chance to choose her extra-cirricular classes. She chose Astronomy, Ancient Runes, and Care of Magical Creatures (since Pansy wanted them all to join it). Daphne found Ancient Runes to be the most interesting, though she kept this nerdy discovery quiet. She knew how much the more interesting girls liked to make fun of Hermione Granger's arm in the air and erratic scribbling -- hadn't she joined in the cackling almost daily at the Muggleborn's expense?

The introduction of Umbridge to Hogwarts caused Daphne some moments of glee. She had always been held back from doing anything especially meddlesome by following the lead of others, but with the Inquisitorial Squad, she was able to get back at a few people that she had a special distaste for (or had been influenced to hate).

Dumbledore's death was shocking, if only because it made the war real to Daphne, and she realized that she wasn't safe at Hogwarts. It didn't matter that the rest of the school went up in flames, just let Daphne Greengrass keep herself safe. She wasn't sure that she would continue on at Hogwarts for her 7th year, but her mother continued to lecture her that if she just went and finished it that she'd be happy.

Deepest Secret: Daphne steals. Buried in her trunk is a secret compartment that she unlocks only when she is certain that she is alone. The little compartment fills up each year to be taken home and her treasures set out on her little table at her bedside. From pearl earrings to a package of tissues sticking out of a third year's bag, Daphne loves to collect tiny trophies. If she knows that she can get away with it she'll use it unashamedly -- like the tissues, but she often hides away things that her roommates might notice.

She has a secret love for Ancient Runes and Egyptian Scripts. When she had to meet with Severus Snape for career guidance, both Snape and Umbridge were mildly supportive of a career at Gringott's for the girl, and she has a book on Cursebreaking that her mother brought her and will occasionally check out a book at the library. She likes to keep this interest as quiet as she can, though most of her dorm mates have seen her with one of the books if she has forgotten to cover it with Witch Weekly.
