So far he'd tormented Bel, removed the threat of souling, and gotten annoyed by the Winchesters.
That last one wasn't sitting too well with him, but luckily he had something special in mind. Torturing those you knew was fun and all, but it did have that nasty habit of getting boring. Besides, the sun would be coming up soon. He had to find something to help him while away the hours.
Lucky him. That something just so happened to be walking through the park right now.
Claire wasn't just walking through the park; she was striding, arms swinging stiffly at her side as she headed alongside the pond.
She was up early, and felt like heading out to the beach to watch the sunrise.
Angelus changed the angle of his path so he could get in her way. Accidentally, of course.
"Jeez, I'm sorry!" he said, stopping himself before they could make contact. "I didn't even see you there! Man you gave me a fright."
Claire jumped when he suddenly appeared in her path, but smiled as she overcame the shock.
"Hey," she said. "Uh - sorry?"
"Now don't tell me - " Angelus snapped his fingers a few times as though trying to prompt a memory. "It was just yesterday - Claire, right? Did I get it?"
"Yeah."
Claire's smile switched from worried and confused to a more friendly one.
"That was a good performance. You had me worried."
Angelus smiled right back. "I can't tell you how much that means to me. All I ever want to do in life is help people. Especially good people, like you."
Claire exhaled loudly, almost a laugh at the blatent flattery.
"And what makes you think I'm a good person," she countered, smirking at him.
"You're taking the class, right?" Angelus replied. "Isn't that all about helping people?"
"And there's me thinking it was all about not being math," Claire replied.
Her smile, though, spoke of being very flattered by being thought of as good.
Angelus chuckled. "Could be that too. Man, sucks how they make you go to class here, doesn't it?"
"Yeah," Claire agreed. "I'm still looking for the school that doesn't. When I find it, I'm definitely transferring."
"Cute and funny," Angelus said. "Your boyfriend must be a lucky guy."
Claire raised her eyebrows, torn between mocking it as a line and being flattered that she was worth using a line on.
In the end she shook her head.
"I don't have boyfriend."
"Girlfriend?"
Claire laughed, and shook her head. "I'm not seeing anyone."
And given how warm her cheeks were becoming, she was kind of glad of it right now.
Angelus smiled when he saw the blush. He took a step closer, ducking down just a bit so he wouldn't look so intimidating. "So what do you do with all your freetime?"
Claire instinctively took a step back, but caught herslefand made it a little one.
"I'm a cheerleader," she offered. That took more time then people thought.
Okay, now he was staring at her.
"...seriously?"
Claire laughed suddenly.
"What, that's so surprising?"
"More like I can't believe my luck," Angelus said. "You're not Catholic, are you?"
Claire's brows furrowed as she gave him a curious look.
This was suddenly weird.
"No. Why?"
If he noticed the weird, Angelus gave no indication of it. "Do the words 'Vampire Slayer' mean anything to you?"
It had been a long time since Claire and Buffy talked about Slayers at the welcome picnic, and even then, the qualifier hadn't been added.
So she was being honest when she shook her head.
"Is that a band?"
Angelus shrugged, mostly for himself. "Eh. One of three ain't bad. So where you headed, Claire?"
"To the beach," Claire said, still looking at him like he might be a little crazy.
"I thought I'd watch the sunrise."
"Got company?" he asked.
She shook her head again.
"No, my roomie's still asleep. Like all sane people."
Angelus gave her a look that was something like sympathy. "Aww, so you were going to be all by yourself?"
Claire smiled back.
"Being on my own's not so bad. I guess you could come if you wanted, though?"
"Really?" Angelus asked giving her a smile... that turned into one with fangs. "Awh shucks. That's awfully nice of you."
Claire had seen the face the day before of course, so she wasn't really shocked.
But she did take a definite step back, looking worried.
"Of course, I guess you don't really want to see the sunrise, right?"
"Nope," Angelus said. He reached to try to grab her by the arm. "But I think I know how we can stay amused."
Suddenly Claire was very scared indeed. And not nearly fast enough to snatch her arm away. So she just had to settle for pulling hard against his grip to try and break it.
"Let go!"
...as if that was going to work.
"Hmm, there's a thought," Angelus said. He jerked her closer. "How about no?"
She yanked again on her arm, completely uselessly depsite the feeling that it was going to come right out of its socket.
Being pulled closer just terrified her more, and she opened her mouth to scream
Someone had to be around, right?
"None of that." Angelus went to clamp his hand over her mouth. "Now we can do this the easy way or I could knock you unconscious. What's it gonna be?"
Suddenly finding herself with something cold and undead over her mouth didn't really do anything for Claire's state of calm, and unsurprisingly she opted for the hard route.
She jerked her arm again - and this time it really did pop loose - and kicked out at him.
"Fiesty! I like it." Impressed with her determination, he let go of her arm and went to grab her by the front of her shirt. He didn't worry about getting hit with a kick. He'd handled much worse.
Claire didn'tfeel all that fiesty. She was crying now, but out of frustration as much as fear. When her arm was released, she felt it slide back into place quickly, but it might as well have stayed out, for all the good it did to try and break his grip on her shirt.
Unbidden, the memory of Jackie telling her to run rose up in her mind, and she choked back a sob.
"Tears already? I'm flattered." Angelus moved his other hand up to cover Claire's mouth and nose. "But let's not jump to the end too quickly."
Claire glared at him over his hand, and tried to hit him on the shoulder. Or anywhere.
There was no way she was giving him the satisfaction of seeing her give up.
He didn't need her to give up. He just needed her to stop breathing long enough to pass out. Making her give up - well that was part of the fun for later.
It took a while for that to happen: longer than it should have, especially with Claire writhing in effort the entire time.
But even lizard like cellular regeneration requires oxygen, and eventually she stilled, everything turning black.
Angelus smiled, hoisted Claire over his shoulder, and took her down into the sewers.
