I sent this reply via e-mail, but since I don't trust LJ....

MSN does not let you send or recieve IMs from people who are set to "appear offline". Also, if you want to avoid people, just block them. I shouldn't have to drive myself insane trying to get an IM through to you (because there is a way to do it, it just involves a massive hack patch that I don't have the patience to install afterwards.)
