The most frightening person in my childhood (outside my immediate family, ha-ha!) was my third grade teacher. She was imperious, insensitive, cruel, critical, nasty, petty, hypocritical, hypercorrect, frightening, mistaken, and altogether wrong, about everything. My year in her room was worse than wasted.
