I'm presently reading The Lost Steersman, the third Steerswoman novel by Rosemary Kirstein. I can't even give you the bare conclusion, because it will give you the entirely wrong idea about the book.

(Pssst. The series is the Steerswoman series.)

I really enjoyed them -- I've now read all four, and am experiencing that familiar pang of wanting there to be more story. I'll have to check out the ones it reminds you of, though -- thanks for the recommend!

Of course. Fixed. I blame my subconscious sexism.

I actually don't know if the recommendation necessarily works in reverse, but you should tell me if it does.

I have ordered the fourth. I keep expecting to get to that point in a series where I am bored because I now know all the important bits about the world, and the author is content to let her characters just live there for a while -- but so far that's not even close to happening. And yeah, I want there to be more story. And there apparently is another completed novel, but Kirstein decided she wanted to add one in between 4 and what would have been 5, so it's not coming out yet.
