gardening disaster

My tomato plant tipped over.

Two branches came off, as well as twenty unripened fruit & seven semi- to fully ripened ones. That's almost half of all of what had developed on the plant.

We always did a wire brace thing with tomato plants. Sorry for the loss of your fruit.

Yeah, I thought I could do with just a stake. This is the first time I've grown tomatoes & I didn't know a cage would be in order. By the time I realized the latter would have been better than the former, the plant was too big to retroactively fit into the cone. I'll definitely know for next time, assuming there will be one.

Thanks for the consolation. My goal is to give them to someone who likes fried green tomatoes.

:)

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the flavor but I know a couple of people who do. There are enough of them that they should make a solid skillet-full.

The trick to fried green tomatoes is to cook them on low for a very long time, maybe 2 hours? They turn into candy.
They do still have a fried green tomato favor, so if you've already tried the slow cook, pass then along. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it. It works best when you have friends over who know it will take forever and it's just an excuse to hang out and chat. Having lots of pans going at once (enough to cook them all? Since 2 batches =4 hours) is also a very good idea.

If you put the tomatoes that even have a blush of yellow or orange on them in a sunny spot, it's likely they'll still ripen for you.

Bummer, though.

Yeah. It wasn't even that windy--I'm surprised the plant went down. Now it's got some bent branches & scuff marks to boot. Poor thing.
