WIP (Jen/Lestrade

Oh, god, not another one. *headdesk*

I'm actually quite concerned. I think I've lost the characters' voices. Maybe'll it'll pass?

Jen could hear the faint sound of rain hitting the window. It was quiet, but enough to wake her.

She wasn’t the only one.

She tried to blink away sleep as she met Lestrade’s gaze. ‘Hey,’ she said, sleep softening her speech.

‘Hey,’ he replied, his eyes not leaving her face. His gaze was so intense she was positive he was studying her. What for, she had no idea.

She was glad that in the relative darkness of the room he wouldn’t see her face flush under such scrutiny.

She propped herself up on her elbows. ‘Everything okay?’

‘Hm?’ Her question surprised him, interrupted his train of thought.

‘It’s - ‘ She squinted, looked at the bright read numbers on the digital clock on Lestrade’s nightstand. ‘It’s after two in the morning. You should be asleep.’

He leaned down and kissed her forehead. ‘So should you.’

She smiled ruefully. ‘I’m not the one who has to work in the morning,’ she pointed out.

He shrugged. ‘I’ve worked with less sleep.’

‘So have I,’ she said, ‘but it doesn’t make it any easier to get through the day.’

She brought a hand up, letting it rest on his chest. Gently, she pushed down until he got the message and lay down on his back. ‘Alright. Now tell me what’s going on in that head of yours,’ she said.

He feigned surprise. ‘I thought you were a medical doctor, Doctor Watson,’ he teased.

‘I moonlight,’ she replied flatly. Fact, she’d spent more time trying to figure what made people do the things that they did since returning to London than she ever had. Given that it was practically impossible to sustain a normal job while sharing an apartment with and ‘assisting’ Sherlock Holmes, she’d been exploring different avenues of helping people. Understanding them, for starters.

‘It’s job-related,’ he warned.

They had an unspoken rule in the bedroom: no work talk.

She shrugged. ‘I’m a big girl. I think I’ll be able to handle it.’
