This morning ephraim and I have been looking at things for children's rooms. I have found the gender stereotypes to be shocking - why on earth do things need to be labelled as "for girls" or "for boys"? Why does it seem that there's almost always only a choice between something pale pink with princesses on or an identical thing in blue with tractors on? ( Read more... )

That riles me up sooooooooo badly too, and I don't even have kids. I suspect that if I ever did I'd have to figure out how to make my own clothes and toys for them...

It wasn't like that when we were kids - I wonder when and why it changed?

Nah, you would realize that all those 'my kids won't do/wear/eat/like *insert whatever it is you strongly object to here* go right out of the window:) Unless you really indoctrinate them, rather than just guiding them, leaning a sapling against a support, rather than pruning a bonzai, they will kinda chose their own way, which is good and healthy. Forcing either chips or strict vegan, xfactor or mozart on your kids is equally not cool.

We painted Jack's room white. Still he has ended up with blue tractor things...

Ugh. I hate those kind of gender stereotypes. Shame there isn't wallpaper based on Where The Wild Things Are or The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

I particularly like the spider wallpaper: http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/dupenny/product/hand_printed_spider_wallpaper?P36=DFYNXP

It ain't cheap, mind you.

Nah - I really can't stand the way borders break up the flow of a room and make it look so much smaller. Nasty peely horrid things.

Gabe loves his Winnie the poo wallpaper, perhaps gentle rather than sissy, its good for children's worlds to be gentle where possible. I think sometimes we forget our children's taste in things isn't as sophisticated as ours.
