The Volvo chaps certainly know how to put on a good promotional track event. I've been to a few of these things, and they're usually relatively well-behaved, none of this squealing wheels rubbish and certainly no sliding things about unless you're on the skid pan thankyewverymuch. Not so today. Perhaps the easiest way to explain the feel of the day

I guess a lot of people *don't* pay enough attention already, and that's who these aids are aimed at. I used to think cameras that showed what's behind you were silly, then I drove a car with one and loved it (probably more useful for someone like me who's short and so can't see behind very well anyway).

So... how do you operate it with the ignition off. Or the battery out???

They normally have some kind of AA-man override for Emergency Circumstances which involves pulling off trim etc, I think.

I don't know how it works with the ignition off, but I do know that when we had the floods all the cars with electronic handbrakes suddenly became totally immovable, so I assume that it stays on when the electrics are out for whatever reason.
