Wow, that sounds like awful planning by the event runners. I was a regular attendee to Reading during my college days (not Leeds, tried and it was awful) and cant imagine having to faff that much just to get to a campsite.
Can you go for day tickets next time and pick the day that has the most you want??
I think the problem was that once the in field became unusable, the available areas were very limited and had to work around the cordoned off track. I don't think there's much that they could have done with the site to make it better organised, but things like a drop off area for camping kit would really have helped.
I think that it's outgrown its venue tbh, especially given the unavailability of the track area.

You know you could have come crashed here if you were having such a torrid time... it's half an hour by bus which runs all night from east mids :)
That's an open invite for next time you feel the need to go to Donington for any reason
