Writing Tips & FAQ

Disclaimer: This was written purely to share some tips on fanfic writing. However, this doesn’t make me an expert on the subject, so please don’t take this post the wrong way. ^_^

- Figure out when the best time of the day is for you to write. (It’s mostly at night for me, but sometimes mid-afternoons work pretty well too.)

- Watch a lot of videos of the person as you write and take note of his or her gestures/actions, even if there aren’t any subtitles available.

- Get into your character; try to think of what he or she would say or act in a certain situation. (For example, in my perspective, if Mao blurts out something that sounds weird, Jun is most likely going to make her repeat what she said and tease her, and I’m basing this on the videos that I’ve seen and my knowledge of Jun. I would feel awkward if Jun openly comforts her in a tenderly way, like, ‘Oh hime, you’re such a silly girl’ because that doesn’t sound like him to me. Not even when he’s being controlled by his emotions. Another example is from a discussion I had with a fellow fanfic writer. Would Mao be the person to confess her feelings or the one being confessed to? I would say Mao wouldn’t be the one to tell a guy ‘I like you’ because that’s what she said in an interview and she doesn’t seem like the type to do so anyway. She might hint that she likes him, but I doubt she would openly tell him that. But this is my perspective and you are entitled to yours.)

- When you’re stuck, try reading a book, watch a movie or something else that distracts you. (This doesn’t always work, but when I’m lacking inspiration, I turn to my other hobbies and let myself go. Sometimes, I’m lucky enough to find that a breath of fresh air helps me come up with the next line or scene in the story.)

- Read before you write; read a lot of books. (I know real-life gets in the way and reading for pleasure might be impossible, but if you have a break, even if it’s five minutes, grab a book to read. (Anything but Twilight.) My subway ride to work is only five minutes and that’s when I read. Reading lets you see how to structure sentences, build suspense, organize your plot, and develop characters.)

- Write everyday, if possible. (Emails, journal entries, random thoughts - just keep on writing.)

I don’t know what else to write, but if you have questions about writing, you can definitely ask me here! If you want to ask anonymously, you can ask me at formspring --> http://www.formspring.me/chasingpolaris
