The cold, harsh white walls of the tiny bedroom made the atmosphere more like a prison than anything. The chill that ran through the room wasn’t any different. It was a quiet containment for the single figure that sat on the snowy white bed. The individual was dressed in pajamas that matched the room. As he sat up in the bed, he never moved save for the occasional robotic blinking, which was the only indication that he was alive. The vacant orbs glistened slightly in the artificial light but were void of emotion. The vibrant soul that once was there had disappeared.
It had been three months since that fateful day. Kazamine Kaoru had changed the wrong that he did back in 1623 and, with the help of Miki, he was able to come back to the present time. Unfortunately, due to the constant time traveling and amount of time he had spent there, he suffered a massive side effect... losing himself. He had lost a great deal of his memory due to the machine and now he was a shell of what he once was. Although the machine had been destroyed and all the employees involved were eliminated by Miki, the facility still existed but was locked down. The woman felt that it was the only safe place Kazamine could be so that she could help regain his memory back, and hopefully, back to the way he used to be. She was entrusted long ago by her ancestors to protect him and save him, for he was the most important person; the world could not lose him, not like this. She was determined to help him in any way possible, but now more than ever, she wanted to help him out of the goodness of her heart rather than out of obligation to her ancestors.
In the three months that had past, there seemed to be no effect in her efforts. He would only say very little when asked questions, but during the past month, he started saying nothing at all. Miki was worried to see this downfall, but she was determined to stay positive and to continue to work with him the best she could. The only way he would respond was with his eyes or slight head movements, but it was only when she spoke to him as if he was a child; as long as that gave some kind of positive response, she continued doing so.
But the worst times were when he would have terrible night spells. When his eyes closed to fall asleep, not a moment too soon would he be up screaming. Miki tried to study up on what it could be, but found nothing that would cause his nightmares. It seemed to be psychological, even though the Tensei had warped his cells, it had also warped his mind in more ways than one. The mind was a difficult thing to crack. It was even harder now that he still didn't know who he was, and on top of that, he had stopped communicating. He still seemed to be trusting towards Miki but that was the last thread she seemed to be able to hang onto.
"Kazamine-kun," she spoke softly as she gazed at him. Miki watched as he stared at his lap once more in a trance. "When will you ever regain your memory?"
Cold. The dark room had a sharp chill in the air and was strangely quiet. He found himself trapped in a room with seemingly no doors or windows. The black walls seemed to move the longer he stared at them, as if the demons came out to play. He shifted his eyes towards the ground, afraid that if he stared any longer, they would pounce. He felt that as long as he kept to himself, he felt safe. His breathing hitched as he heard a loud noise across the way. He was afraid to look... afraid to breathe.
It was what he had feared...
The spirits danced on the walls again. Taunting. Hissing. Why couldn't they leave him alone? He tried to close his eyes but even then, they invaded his vision with their gory stares and sharpened fangs. He could only stand there and pray that they wouldn't hurt him. He wasn't sure what his purpose was anymore but he kept trying to find some kind of light through the fog.
And it began again...
He could feel the intense burn in the pit of his stomach that made him keel over in pain. He whimpered softly as he held his stomach and the other hand went straight to his head. The intense sharp pain was almost too much to bear. It always felt like a migraine... but something much worse. The immense pain was eating at him like a knife, being stabbed repeatedly without mercy. The creatures emerged from the darkness with eyes as bright as the moonlight; soulless orbs surrounded and silently laughed at him, taunting him. It seemed they were closing in one by one as they circled. Suddenly, he felt a sharp, quick slash against his arm... then another on his leg. He turned his head and saw fresh wounds on his skin. This wasn't the first time this had happened; the fresh wounds had appeared over his old scars from before. The blood slowly ran down his arm and leg as he felt the familiar tickling against his skin. All he could think to do was scream but his voice was gone... nothing. He fell to the ground... feeling the pain all over his body... He kept trying to scream with his soundless voice...
It was happening again...
Miki heard the familiar pained screams coming from the next room and she raced over, swearing and cursing at herself that she shouldn’t ever leave him alone, even for a second. Kazamine flailed around his bed violently, his eyes closed and oblivious to his current surroundings. Instantly, she moved in to try to restrain him once more. Calm him. Again. And again. She didn’t know how much longer this was going to go on...
Miki was able to calm him once more. It seemed to be harder and harder each time. It took her whole being, emotionally and physically, to make sure he felt safe once more. In the beginning months, she had hoped this would have passed... but now, it seemed to be something more than just an after effect. It was something ingrained deep into his mind that wouldn't let go; holding and torturing the last shred of Kazamine's being.
She needed to think of something and soon... for she felt that at this rate, it would be too late to save him...
Kazamine found himself in the dark room again, but the aura had changed. He carefully looked around the room to see what might be lurking. The scenery had changed, as if imitating a scene change in a play, the colors grew brighter and formed shapes of the forest. The hidden birds started to sing and the faint sounds of the bushes swaying in the breeze filled his ears. Curious, he stood up from his sitting position and began to scout around his surroundings; his steps were cautious and hesitant. He wasn't sure what was happening nor what he was supposed to do.
"Sasuke!" he heard a familiar voice call out. He wasn't sure why it sounded familiar, especially when that wasn't even his name. The bushes rustled and Kazamine snapped his head towards the noise as his heart raced. He tried to run but he tripped over his feet. As he scrambled to get up once more, someone grabbed him. He tried to scream but a hand stopped him from doing so. He noticed the hand was gentle so he turned his head towards the figure to see a beautiful woman. He recognized her, but he wasn't sure why. She gave him a warm smile which only enhanced her beauty.
"We have to hurry," she said to him, grabbing his hand. He jerked his hand out of hers instantly, not knowing what was going on. The woman stared at the hand that tried to grab his before looking up at him. He looked at her, confused as to why he should trust her. She quickly wrapped her arms around him, taking him by surprise, and held him tightly as if he was her life source. He almost pushed her off but he instantly felt a warmth that was familiar. He couldn't explain it, but it was a feeling of want, of need. The aura that exhumed from her was inviting and he instinctively wrapped his arms around her slowly, finally accepting the hug. At that moment, he instantly remembered who she was. That was all he could remember though, but that was enough. He released her and she followed. He looked deep into her eyes and the familiar twinkle was unmistakable.
"Otoki," he said her name, finally finding his voice. She nodded, glad that he had regained his memory.
"Sasuke," she said, brushing her hand softly against his cheek. He nodded, solely remembering that to be his identity.
The moment was short lived as a rustling from the bushes startled them. Otoki tried again and grabbed his hand, this time he allowed it, as they both scrambled to get to their feet to start running. Suddenly, Kazamine saw dark figures running towards him, but he hadn't been quick enough. He was tackled by the beings and thrown to the ground. He tried to scream for help but it only made them force him down even more. He couldn't find Otoki for she had run off without him. He wasn't able to see the faces of the ones who apprehended him and every time he moved his head to try to look, he was forced harder into the ground.
"It's all your fault," a man yelled, finally letting him up. Kazamine quickly got up and looked at the accuser with a confused look.
"What are you talking about?" Kazamine asked, trying to figure out why this man also looked familiar. He knew he had seen him somewhere before...
And that's when it finally hit him... his heart dropped to his stomach as he remembered the horrible things that had taken place. The things that never should have happened... the awful sights that he had seen when all of the people who had called him friend had died in vain...
All because of him...
He slowly remembered the events... and then he remembered that he had gone back in time, risking his life, to save these people... to create a new future for them. He had sacrificed his life for them, for he felt that he had no other purpose after that...
But here he was... facing them once more when he had thought he had left them behind in a better life... and they were gazing upon him with disgust.
Why...?
The man pointed a finger towards him, "This wouldn't have happened if you hadn't shown up!"
"But I-" Kazamine started to say but was instantly interrupted.
"No! It's all your fault!" he repeated as if Kazamine didn't hear him the first time.
"But I fixed it! I fixed it..." Kazamine trailed off, trying to think about everything he had gone through to accidentally destroy, but ultimately fix, the past.
"It wouldn't need fixing if you hadn't come along! We were doing just fine, you started all this!" the man continued to yell while the others nodded in agreement. Kazamine could feel the tears as they formed in his eyes, he could barely see them anymore through the blurry vision.
But it was then that he saw the figures flicker... and it was then that he knew something wasn't right. The sinister looks on their faces were revealed... it was too familiar. Kazamine realized that this wasn't real... they were nothing more than the same demons in disguise that haunted him.
All he could see were the demons around them as they transformed back to their original selves. All of them had escaped save for one. He reached for the closest thing he could find, which happened to be a knife. He grabbed it and held it tight against his palm. His eyes were sinister, full of hate and rage. He was determined to end this once and for all.
Kazamine closed in towards Miki who tried desperately to scoot back away from him. She wasn't sure why she wasn't running but she seemed paralyzed by Kazamine's devilish gaze; it scared her to no end how evil his eyes were. As he closed in, slowly but surely, he raised the knife above his head, ready for the strike. As he did this, Miki finally found her voice.
"Kazamine-kun!! Please don't do this!! You can't, you're not like this at all! They're controlling you! It's not real!!"
He raised his arm up more as if he wasn't listening, her heart sank as she knew it wasn't getting through but she tried one last time in the mere moment she had.
"Kazamine! Stop it, please!!" she screamed as loud as she could, almost piercing her own eardrums. The cry was desperate and high pitched as she covered her head with her arms, scared to see him do the unthinkable.
She sobbed silently and noticed nothing happened in that split second. She raised her head bravely and looked at the man. His face had changed, his breathing was still erratic but the sound of it changed; his breath was hitched, his eyes glistened in the artificial light as he slowly tried to make sense of where he was and what was going on. Flickering of his eyes and the confusion only meant a good sign to Miki. A glimmer of hope sparkled in her heart but she did not dare move or speak as she watched him.
Kazamine relaxed his arms and the knife fell out of his hand instantly. His breathing became heavier as he realized that he was back in the light, something he hadn't seen in so long. It finally felt real. He started to cry and his sniffles turned into sobs that he couldn't control anymore, as he fell to his knees in a shaking heap.
He was back to himself... it was as if a huge weight was lifted off of him; the pressure against his heart was gone. The feeling of being free from the clutches of something so horrible, so evil... he had almost forgotten what it felt like to be a human being again; to be able to breathe the fresh air again. Miki held him tight as he cried, finally being able to breathe a sigh of relief herself for the first time.
Finally, he was back.
