Wow. This was so good. I loved all the canon details you had so effortlessly weaved into the story. The way their relationship progressed was great to read.

Well, I imagined it sort of as an alternate start to the series, if a bit later along than canon, so don't worry-in my admittedly unwritten headcanon for this, he does get out somehow.
