Whatever happened to the middle ground?

Why is it that if something is not blatantly 'Liberal', it MUST be Conservative? (And vice versa) Why must everything be black and white noways? Is no one else capable of seeing a middle gtound? (what used to be called 'centrist ( Read more... )

There doesn't seem to be any such thing as civil discourse anymore. It's frightening to me; as yo say, there is no respect hell there don't even *hear* the other side. Minds are already made up; anything the other side says HAS to be wrong without even listening to it. That's no way to run a country. It's like our 'leaders' are a bunch of 8 year olds on the school yard calling each other poopy heads.

I'd also add to that that I am constantly confused by the seeming fact that if you feel conservative/liberal about one issue, then OF COURSE you MUST feel that way about all these other issues. The pigeonholing drives me absolutely batty, and it makes it really difficult for me to make close friends -- the people with whom I so often connect are, on one hand, some of the most compassionate and creative people I know. And then on the other, they express vitriol and hate for this whole assumed subset of the population -- never dreaming that the venom they use may apply to me as well. Because the assumption is that because I'm like them in some ways, I am in all these other ways too. And I'm not. :(
