In-Game Character Information
Name: Riku Crescent*
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Age: 16
* Since KH does not give surnames to their characters, Riku has no canon surname. I took 'Crescent' from Lucretia Crescent, a minor character of FFVII and biological mother of the all-famous Sephiroth. Crescent is also derived from crescere, similar to 'crescendo', which means, roughly, 'to grow'. As one of the KH characters to undergo the most character development and growth throughout the series, I thought it fit rather well. And I was going crazy trying to decide so I defaulted.
Personality:
Riku exudes confidence from the way he walks to the sometimes snarky retorts. His steady, self-assured stance is evident in a single glance; as is his tendency to tease his friends, when the opportunity presents itself. Certainly, Riku’s sense of humor can be somewhat dry, and he has a competitive streak a mile wide. Though usually level-headed, he’ll rarely back down from a challenge or fight.
But the slant of his shoulders and the smirk on his lips belie a deep-set insecurity. Riku needs to be needed. What started out as a simple want to be noticed by his father developed into a mild complex that convinced him that affection had to be earned, and, in a tiny corner of his mind, that his intrinsic worth without doing anything was doubtful. He made up for this, however, by establishing bonds with other people and proving his worth by being the best one in sports or in magic, being strong and being strong enough to protect the people most precious to him, such as his friends, though they are few and far in between. For them, Riku would do absolutely anything, regardless of consequences.
This self-same insecurity that subconsciously drives Riku to excel and protect his friends (not to mention pressures him to uphold his 'cool' image), however, is also what makes him most fragile. Without the assurance of his own worth, he tends to easily distrust and loathe himself and become very easily jealous when his position is being threatened. Riku himself does not understand this, however, and tends to simply explode in rage, when pushed.
In fact, this is what happened when he used powerful Dark Magic against Sora, nearly getting himself expelled and leaving him unable to forgive himself, but wholly committed to righting as many wrongs he can. The reason for this is because, although Sora was not grievously injured, Riku was shaken by the very act. Rather, he was terrified of himself and the malice he never knew he had so much of. Since he cannot believe in his fundamental worth or 'good', he could only conclude that he was 'evil'. Dark, at the very least. This was a huge blow to Riku's ego, though it would heal with time and forgiveness.
It must be noted that Riku’s emotional insecurity does not depend on the presence of his friends, however, so much as the assurance that they are still his friends; that they still need/want him ( and that they are inside each other’s hearts).
Rather, he is fiercely independent, strong-minded and strong-willed with the stubborn determination to match. This is largely a product of being left to himself for most of his years growing up, though Riku’s spirit has always been naturally restless, edged with wanderlust. He often explores unknown areas whenever he can, just barely kept from going beyond the village limits by the promises he made with his father. Riku's curiosity would have otherwise led him to far greater distances.
Even though he is a born dreamer, (with the vaguely sappy philosophical advice or comments sometimes doled out to friends to go with it,) it goes against Riku’s nature to ever sit still when something can be done. Riku will take initiative when he thinks either himself, or, more importantly, his friends are being threatened. Moreover, although more hesitant after nearly killing one of his best friends, Riku is driven by an impulsive curiosity, such as finding out who his mother is or perhaps what lies beyond the boundaries of his village. Something that helps him in his studies, though it never keeps him out of trouble.
And once he starts something and makes his decision, for better or worse, he will follow it through until the end, never giving up until his last breath-or the intervention of a friend.
Background:
*All details confirmed with respective muns.
Riku was born to a White Mage father and an Dark witch with Asian blood who fell in love. However, due to the pressures from their families, they never got married and Riku’s mother was quietly married off to another dark wizard after Riku was secretly born. He was then taken into custody by his father. Luckily for him, he inherited his father’s pale hair and turquoise eyes, forestalling most questions about his heritage. His father, a comfortably well-off top-level healer, never married, and cared for his son deeply. But as Riku grew, he started to look more like his mother and his father came to withdraw from him, pining after his lost love and throwing himself into work. Riku only asked him once about his mother and his father told him never to mention it again.
This promise could not change his curiosity, however, and Riku resolved that he would find her one day. For a brief period of time, he even wandered around their village trying to see who could have been his mother. He never could find anyone close, but his father eventually found him asleep on top of a haystack in a barn.
While growing up, Riku had several playmates in the town he lived in. As one of the older kids, he became accustomed to sort of looking after them. Riku worked hard to excel, in the hopes of getting his distracted father’s attention and, failing that, living up to the expectations of the younger kids. Most of these, however, were muggles, and unable to tell them about much of his life, Riku felt alienated even while amongst them.
Of note, however, is that he met both Roxas and Ventus when his father sent him to primary school, but due to Ven’s accident and Roxas’ withdrawn ways, they were never able to establish a deep bond in the sandbox. (Riku still talks to them sometimes, though.)
Bereft of his father’s love and attention, Riku started to subconsciously feel that affection was something that had to be earned. Without someone he could truly call a friend, Riku also started to find the village stifling.
However, they still had a lot of fun and Riku shone brightly among them, clever and strong.
When he got his acceptance letter, Riku was thrilled to be able to get out of the village. With his confidence and talents, it didn’t take him long to make friends in Hogwarts, but he found true friends during his second year, when he noticed two first years ahead of him having trouble with the platform. He helped them out, they started talking, and some minutes later, Riku found himself sitting in their car and becoming fast friends.
Quickly attached at the hip, all three of them spent three years of happy and sometimes trouble-making friendship, during which Riku got attached to them both. However, he retained his old views and kept a reflexive pretense up as their infallible big brother, even while with them.
When Sora started making more and new friends, getting busier and busier, Riku started to feel left out, an uneasy resentment taking root inside his heart. He brushed it away, reasoning that Sora would see that he was better, after all, and return to him and Kairi soon enough. However, he started to train just a little bit more and tried to learn stronger and stronger spells, aided by some older students.
As fate would have it, Sora and Riku had a duel and Riku used a spell he found in a book he’d found in an abandoned area of the school while exploring by himself. Sora was hurt and Riku immediately guilt-stricken. His father was called immediately. The spell Riku had used had been powerful dark magic. It was only due to sheer luck that it had barely brushed Sora, destroying a nearby table instead.
Grimly, his father struck an agreement with the headmaster and took Riku out of school that very day. He then sat Riku down and told him, after almost 15 years, who his mother really was: a Dark witch. And it was clear that this part of his heritage had manifested itself, multiplied by Riku’s hard-won strength.
His father quickly went on to explain that his mother had contacted him and that Riku would be staying with her for the next two years. Over those two years, Riku was taught the intricacies of Dark magic that was his birthright and heritage from his mother and he slowly came to terms with it.
Riku was also sent to Durmstrang, where he was taught the value and the danger of the Dark Arts. Much to Riku’s chagrin, he proved to have great aptitude in the area. However, he did not mix well with the Durmstrang crowd, having come from Hogwarts, he was an instant outcast. Many of the ideals commonly upheld in Durmstrang also went against his own, particularly anything relating to blood, after having dealt with blood purists against Kairi in Hogwarts.
Eventually, this caused enough of a fight that Riku was similarly quietly taken out of Durmstrang and after a conference with his parents and Headmaster Cid and a re-evaluation of Riku’s control, was allowed to re-enroll in Hogwarts.
Except, Riku had never really forgiven himself for hurting Sora. And it may be that some other students at Hogwarts never did, either.
Random Facts:
- His boyhood dream was to become an elite Auror or play Keeper for England.
- When Riku was five, he used accidental LightWhite Magic by healing a playmate who had gotten hurt.
- His wand is 12.5 inches, Dragon Heartstring and Yew. It worried his father a bit, when he first got it.
- His Daemon is an arctic wolf. He assumes it’s a ‘she’, but has so far been too polite to actually check under all that thick fur.
- Riku’s mother named him.
- He has a pet owl named Dusk. Phoenix.
- *When he was Sorted, the Hat took approximately twenty seven minutes to Sort him and even then gave him a choice. Riku was smart alecky and told him he’d walk the in between. The Hat decided.
- Despite telling people off about it, he's a total sap. He's just cooler about it.
Blood: Full / Pureblood.
Preferred House: Gryffindor
Why you think they belong in this house?
Although Riku is a curious boy with dreams and ambition and willing to use any means at the cost of himself, it is always for the people most precious to him- his friends, really. He places their safety and protection above his own and would save them in a heartbeat. Never a coward nor content to stay simply and humbly loyal, Riku is far more active than his calm façade would imply, far more likely to take initiative in any encounter, regardless of consequences or who he is up against. All very Gryffindor traits.
School Year: 6th
Quidditch Position: Keeper, if available. But Chaser is fine.
Would you like the character to possibly get a higher position?
Yes, I’m fine with the idea, if he would be considered for it. Riku’s a responsible kid. I think that if the position were available, he would be open to receiving it and taking care of the younger kids. But he wouldn’t resist bending a rule or two of his own if he thought it was justifiable. Just a heads up for any head of house who would suggest he become one. Additionally, he would be mightily puzzled at getting such a job after nearly getting expelled once.

[Private; this page has been ripped out, crumpled, and thrown into the fireplace. Unfortunately, this also means that it’s full of self-inflicted guilt-trip, some confusion, and some pretenses. I'm open to doing more samples, though, from Riku's past if you'd want to see his cockier aspect. He regains most of it after he deals with his friend issues.]
Looks like I’m back. Just not the way I wanted to be here.
Nothing’s changed, and the dorms still need a good silencio, but I guess I can live with that.
Sora, Kairi… I… can’t meet you yet, I don’t deserve to be here, but I’ll try I’ll make up for it, I promise.
I’m stronger now, and I won’t let it happen again. I’ll keep both of you safe, this time.

[Right after the transfer back, Riku has a talk with his Daemon.]
Riku carelessly threw on his black uniform robes, pausing for a moment to look into the mirror over the dresser. It felt almost strange, wearing the same cotton and linen uniform, the gray sweater and slacks, after two years of having to wear fur cloaks and Durmstrang’s fleece-lined uniforms.
Almost as though he hadn’t changed from that day. But no, he had changed. And he’d changed for the better. But then, Riku thought with a soft, mirthless laugh, that wasn’t exactly saying much.
Glancing around at the snoring dormitory room around him, Riku swiftly took the stairs down to the common room, stealing out the door in mere seconds. He could not be caught. He could not afford to be caught. Especially not by the two people he both wanted and did not want to see the most.
Thankfully, the hallways leading to the Great Hall were empty, the hour far too early for any of the students to even dream of having gotten up. The footsteps that echoed off Hogwarts Great Hall were his alone.
There was already food on the table- simple food, not the feast that awaited students at the proper breakfast hour, but Riku didn’t particularly care. Grabbing several slices of toast and slathering butter and jam on most, Riku wrapped the entire thing in a napkin and headed outdoors.
By the time he reached the secluded little spot he had found one day when he was a first year, there were four other foot falls padding on the grass beside his.
“Ouka,” Riku nodded, sitting down on a bench damp with dew.
“Still insisting on avoiding them?” The she-wolf replied, doing a fine impression of arching a brow.
“Yeah,” Riku said shortly, wolfing down a piece of toast and absent-mindedly licking butter off his fingers.
“You cannot stay like this forever.” A wolfish snort as she sat down, pluming ghost-silver tail curled about her feet.
“When was the last time you won a bet with me?”
“When you said you could handle a potted plant.”
“It didn’t die.”
“Just barely,” the She-wolf agreed.
Riku shrugged, already on his fourth piece of toast. “And neither will I.”
“You think so, Riku?” Ouka asked, golden eyes piercing.
Riku kept his eyes trained on the bench’s slatted wooden seat, the bread in his mouth suddenly like sawdust. “It’s better this way.”
