My uncle stopped by earlier and gave me just about the best birthday present I've ever gotten.
First, he gave me a car for my sixteenth birthday.
He then gave me a card, which read (spelling and grammar errors included):
Happy Birthday Goob,
Sorry this is late. Wow. 16 years old. When you get older, you realize how time slips away. And what was once a little glob, that looked like a red loaf of balogna, that you're mom plopped in my arms, could possibley be 16 years old, and how it happened in just the blink of the eyes.
First, the car. it's a 1966 Chevy Impala. it had a 455 and a 6 pack carb. Of course, you knew that. And, now you can say, you're Uncle Darin, got you you're first car.
I wanted to give you these pictures a while ago, but I decided to wait. The funny thing about pictures. They need to be passed on. They tell us who we are, and where we came from. These are som of my favorites. I thought you might like them.
I hope you had a great birthday. And, you had a great sweet 16 party. And, despite what you're mom and dad might think about it, the greatest moment of my life was you're mom's 16th birthday. The first girl I ever kissed was that night. Some day, I'll tell you the whole Ramona Bonk story. You know some of the story. You are an amazing person. And, I'm so glad I'm a part of you're life.
Love,
U. Darrin
On the back of all of the pictures, he wrote little comments that made me laugh. I didn't scan all of the pictures, considering there were well over 20 of them, but here are some.
'It was probably your Elvis phase'
'How can you not like a kid with Bugs Bunny slippers?'
It looks like I have a mullet. >.<
'Not really sure what I was doing.'
My mom... Made that dress.
'I was actually there your first day of kindergarten'
That was a horrible day. I fell on the way to the bus stop, skinned my knee, and ripped my dress.
'Maybe you remember whose feet these are'
My first birthday party.
'A girl and her pony'
'See, you used to like your brother'
My brother, ex-step-cousin Paige, and I.
'God, were you ever that young?'
Even as a kid, I never kept my mouth shut.
'You were just a couple of days old, yet your gramma was already in love with you'
This one sort of makes me cry. My grandma died three months after I was born, so I don't remember her at all. Even so, she flew all the way from Michigan to California to be there when I was born. If she hadn't done so, we never would have seen each other. I miss her.
Thank you... So much, Uncle Darrin. Love you.
