Personality:
Matthieu is genuine, sweet tempered and humorous with the willingness to help out friends, and appease enemies. He doesn’t like not being liked, and wants to be friends with everyone, though he is learning very quickly that he will have enemies, whether he wants them or not.
He’s adventurous and curious and wants to know everything about everybody; often leading to a distinct lack of tact when speaking to somebody. He has the Cowan trait of being very direct, and not saying nine words when he could say three, which although makes him a breath of fresh air, also means that some people find him a little hard to handle!
Matthieu likes to be liked, and enjoys talking to people whoever they may be. He’s very easy to chat to, and always loves discovering new people. He’s generous and will give his last chocolate frog to a needy friend, though he fully expects that frog returned when he is in an equally foul mood, and does not enjoy people who are not being equal friends in return.

Matthieu throws himself into absolutely everything he puts his mind to and will work his hardest to achieve what it is he wants, be it finishing a piece of homework, learning to ride a broom, or (in later life) marrying the girl he falls in love with. As Remy is his older brother, there are several things Matt has learnt, especially regarding girls. He’s not afraid to try out a little bit of pre-teen charm, and knows that his blond hair and pretty green eyes make him akin to a cute little cherub. He’s not as ruthless as his brother when it comes to romance, but he can be annoyingly persistant about chasing down whoever he wants.
School wise, Matthieu is finding out fast that he enjoys detailed, specific subjects such as Potions and Transfiguration, which he can really put his mind and energy to. In further years he’ll excel at Potions, Arithmancy and Ancient Runes, but at the moment he thinks he’ll follow in his brothers footsteps and be brilliant at Charms and DADA.

Matthieu desperately wants to follow in Remys footsteps and be adored and well-renowned like his brother is, which means that he tries so hard to be great in everything in Remy is. He believes himself to be a failure if he’s strong in an area that Remy is not, or doing badly in something his brother excels in, and won’t realise for a long time that he doesn’t have to be the same person.
Being eleven, he’s still very naïve about much of the world, and thinks that if he just puts his mind to it, things will turn out swimmingly. He trusts too easily, and if it is broken he will trust again willingly, which means that he can be a bit of a doormat to those who would take advantage of a cute little first year.
He is patient and willing, but only to a point; if his temper does come out, it is fearsome and he will take a long time to calm down again.
In Academics, Matthieu hates History of Magic with a passion, and although he thinks he is fairly good at Charms, he actually takes a long time to grasp the spell correctly. He doesn’t put himself forward in DADA, so though he scrapes by, it is only by a small margin.

He’s a typical middleclass country lad, and still very naïve about the ways of the world.

“For the third time in a row,” Remy sighed, tired of his little brothers questioning, “In a week. A week.”
Matthieu’s face lit up and he beamed excitedly, looking so adorably intrigued by all of this exciting newness he was about to experience. “And they’ll make me take a test?! What sort of test? What if I fail? You wouldn’t let me fail, would you?”
He wrapped his arm around Remys waist, resting his head on the older boys waist and breathing in the familiar scent of his brother, hoping against hope that he wouldn’t be kicked out of Hogwarts on his very first day. He wanted so badly to do well, to be adored and beloved and carry on the Cowan name.
“Yeah, Matt, I’ll let them ruin my little brother on his first day at Hogwarts. You idiot.”
“I’m not an idiot.” He frowned, stamping his little foot. “Stop calling me that!”
“I can call you whatever I want.”
“No you can’t.” He said firmly. “I’m a wizard now. You have to be nice to me too.”
Remy laughed, and Matthieu found himself being swung up into a huge, tight hug, the breath being squeezed out of him before he even had a chance to defend himself.
“Put me down!” He squeaked, struggling in the tight hold and making absolutely no difference at all. “Put me down or I’ll hex you too!”
