Personality:
Laila Ainsworth is a very out-going girl; she likes pushing herself to her intellectual limits. When it comes to her friends and family she has an unlimited amount of patience and if a friend is in need she is always there to support and listen to them. She accepts the people she loves with all of their flaws included and enjoys having many friends from many different cliques just so she can learn more about different perspectives. She enjoys reading and writing, as well as playing the acoustic guitar her Uncle gave her as a Christmas present last year to go along with her vocal lessons she has been taking since age nine. She’s incredibly modest when it comes to praise and tends to try and turn it back on the giver. Beyond her pursuit for knowledge, she also enjoys being girly and indulging in manicures, over-grooming, jewellery, the colour pink, and fluffy things. Laila is forgiving of her friends but not of her enemies, and tries to act more mature than her age. She puts value on respect and intelligence and makes judgment calls on who she thinks are good people and who she thinks are bad based on those values. However, if someone came along and they were extremely respectful good-natured, she’d rethink the intelligence policy. Not everyone has to have a spotless grade average in order to be a good person.

Laila puts her all into learning her magic and works very hard at her schoolwork. She’s focused on completing her goals herself and is able to meet deadlines she sets for herself. Laila has a very forgiving personality and that to her is a strength, she also very patient when dealing with her housemates, classmates, and dorm mates. Her strongest subjects are Astronomy, Charms, and History of Magic. With Astronomy she enjoys learning about how the cosmos may or may not influence the earth. She loves learning about the constellations because, as her mother once put it, “They are the paintings of the sky made with a thousands diamonds and imagination.” This may have been in the back of her mind when she started Astronomy and since then she has found her passion in it. With Charms she enjoys the spells that they learn in this class better than Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts and because of this she enjoys the class a whole lot more. History of Magic is a strength for Laila since she has a mother who put a lot of emphasis on the importance of history growing up. And since this class is all about the new world Laila must adapt to in order to survive Laila feels it is almost one of the more important classes at Hogwarts. Here she learns about where she came from and what Witches and Wizards have accomplished.

Sometimes, Laila doesn’t do too well in school and she tends to get upset or frustrated if she tried incredibly hard and still managed to fail. Which is exactly what happened with Herbology and Divination. When Laila can learn everything there is to know about a topic and still not succeed at it she gets down on herself if she doesn’t do as well as she assumed she would. However, it seems that Laila hasn’t much a gift when it comes to growing plants or seeing things in a crystal ball and she applauds anyone who can. Despite the fact that Laila can be extremely out-going for some people, she can be quite spiteful with those she doesn’t. With some people Laila does have a bad side and can get incredibly snarky and sometimes short-tempered. Laila is also very precise with most of the things she does and can be a little anal retentive because of it. If someone were to go over to her side of the dorm room and mess up her comforters, she’d get pretty tense about it.
Fears/Motivations:
Laila is deathly afraid of birds and only recently has been able to be in the Great Hall when the owls arrive with the mail. She has nightmares about being trapped in the Owlery and being attacked by a thousand angry owls.
Laila’s motivations are to learn everything she can learn at Hogwarts and make the most of her education. She believes it a priveledged that she’s afforded the opportunity to be accepted into a completely different culture than the one she grew up in.
History:
-The Mother’s Side-
Laila’s Great-Grandfather, Major-General Arnold Hughes Reading, spent his life in the Royal Air Force and was in action during the Second World War. Despite this he was able to marry Laila Harrington (whom Laila Reading is named after) and start a family before he was needed again. He left his two sons Arnold and William with his wife Laila in order to lead a Battalion of the Royal Air Force during the later years of the war. William (the older of the brothers and Laila’s Great-Uncle) idolized his father and joined the army at the age of sixteen. He managed to survive two years in the British XXX Corps but died on July 10th when the Corps invaded Sicily. Laila Harrington-Reading had pled with her husband to try and free William from the army by using the power he had. The Major, however, was proud that his son joined and refused to pull him out, because of this Arnold, his son, has always blamed his father for the death of his big brother.
Arnold moved out when he was fifteen and was able to get work as a fisherman’s hand on a boat called the Amabel. When Arnold’s mentor died from pneumonia he took over ownership of the Amabel. He met Orillia Kensworth by chance when he was dealing with her father (who sold Arnold’s fish and crab) and it was love at first sight. It took Arnold a while in order to get the courage to ask for Orillia’s hand in marriage, mostly because Arnold was so poor and Orillia’s father was well-off. Arnold finally managed to impress her father enough to marry her and they started a small family consisting of Faith and Will (Laila’s mother and uncle). Will was named after Arnold’s brother since the day he was born was exactly thirty years from the day that William died in the war.
Because Faith’s grandfather’s financial support, Faith’s parents were able to send her to University. They also sent William however he dropped out after only a year of school and decided to pursue his dream as a Musician, which ended up being quite successful. Faith got her doctorate in Art History at the University of Hull and met Laila’s father while on a field trip with her third year class at The Deep (the aquarium Alden Ainsworth works at as a marine biologist).
Growing up as an only child with two very busy parents, Laila generally tried to fill every minute up with hobbies. She took vocal classes and learned how to play the guitar with her Uncle’s help. She also ended up hanging around her father’s aquarium and thus made friends with a lot of the people he works with. Ben Henry, twenty year-old student at the University of Hull who works at The Deep for experience in his field of study. Laila admittedly has a big crush on Ben but since he has a girlfriend who is the same age as Ben and is envied by Laila, he’s unavailable. Laila also hangs around with Harvey Brodie who is Alden’s best friend and also a Marine Biologist at The Deep. Since both of Laila’s best friends are a lot older than her, she’s grown up to be a bit more mentally mature than most girls her age.
Laila’s home life is filled with books upon books. From her parents she has learned a great deal about art and biology and the importance of variety in knowledge. Which is why Laila attempts to learn as much as she can about anything and everything. Her father always seems to be lost in thought, however he is not a strict dad and is very supportive of anything that Laila pursues. Alden Ainsworth has no real history since his immediate family was wiped out by a house fire when he was ten. He managed to work hard enough to get a scholarship for University and then worked to pay his way through it. However, he does not feel that Laila needs to go to a fancy school in order to prove anything or be successful - especially since finding out that she is a witch. Neither of Laila’s parents don’t really understand what the wizarding world is, but they believe it to be a great priviledge for their daughter to be accepted into a whole new society. Her mother was won over immediately when Laila brought home a painting for a Christmas present.
Faith Reading is a very energetic woman. She’s fascinated with art but loves learning about things she doesn’t understand. Which might have been what drove her to loving Alden. She’s not very quiet or incredibly organized, but she is very passionate about knowledge and doing things correctly. She loves inspiring others and loves her job as a professor. Faith and Laila get along as if they’re friends. They’re mother-daughter dynamic is such that they talk openly about things that are going on in their lives, which is why Faith knows about the Ben Henry crush and the impending emotional issues with them. Faith would love to have another child which is good since she is currently three months pregnant-Laila is incredibly excited to be a big sister and hopes it’s a girl.
Laila’s relationship with her cousins is a little complicated since she has to keep the fact that she’s a witch from them. Seeing as they are three very imaginative children, keep that a secret has been rather hard for Laila and as such she doesn’t exactly enjoy spending time with them. The oldest, Heather, tries very hard to annoy Laila everytime she visits mostly because of jealousy. Especially since Laila and Heather’s father get along so well.
