EXTENDED APPLICATION -- PLEASE DO AT LEAST A PARAGRAPH ON EACH OF THESE, UNLESS THEY ARE STATED TO BE OPTIONAL
Personality:
By far, Nita's most defining personality trait is her curiousity (and an attached short attention span). She loves to ask questions, and tries to listen to the answers. She's intelligent, but relies more on her instinct and the information she's learned from experience than what she reads in books (though she knows enough to do the research before she dives into a new situation...no point in trying to interview someone about a newly created potion without any clue what it does). If she's interested in something, she'll keep working at it, even if it isn't exciting or she's not good at it: this is her reason for keeping History of Magic into NEWT level. She never excelled at it because she couldn't pay attention in the class, but the information was very interesting, and she wanted to know everything about the world in which she was to live.
Nita reacts quickly, sometimes rashly, but would be the first to apologize if her instincts were wrong. She is friendly and good-natured, and has high moral standards that she holds herself to (and feels that the world would do better if the people in it were so considerate). Her standards particularly apply to her career, as she aspires to report properly and be trustworthy - the idea of a Quick Quotes Quill disgusts Nita. She trusts others because she hopes they would trust her, and genuinely wants to believe people are good at heart. It takes quite a bit to anger Nita - she's pretty easygoing on whole - but when she is upset, she acts out impulsively without always thinking about the consequences.
Nita is a tenacious individual - even if she changes her mind halfway there, she has more than enough determination to try and go after she wants. She will stop at nothing to talk to a source if she deems it necessary, and doesn't like to be told that she can't do something. Many of her "E" grade OWLs (in particular, charms and transfiguration) were barely saved from "A" territory. At that time, she was seriously considering going into healing, and the Es were required for that profession. She changed her mind in between 5th and 6th year, and as her priorities changed, the grades slipped.
Nita clings fiercely to her independence and the idea of having her own life. She was rather isolated from her family from the start (beginning with her much-older brothers, but spreading to her parents when her magical abilities came to light). While she does really well in social situations with many people, she struggles to deal with people on a one-to-one basis in the context of true friendship. With very few exceptions, her friendships are more acquaintences. She's friendly with everyone and generally trusts most, but only truly relies on a few people in her life.
Strengths: Both magical and personality: Nita's biggest strength is her intuition, which is extremely important for a good journalist. She knows when to ask questions, and usually what questions need to be asked. She is magically strong in herbology, potions, and oddly enough, divination: again, strong intution. Nita is not in any way going to have "visions", but she was good at everything but the crystal ball. And though her wandwork isn't necessarily brilliant, she is quite good at defensive spells in defensive situations because she thinks quickly on her feet and reacts accordingly (defensive spells don't have to be something difficult if you can come up with the right simple spell in a pinch).
Obviously, she is an excellent writer. Nita knows full well that she would have been brilliant at History of Magic if she could have only paid attention, because she can definitely write essays. Indeed, her written portions of her charms and transfiguration exams were what kept her above average in those courses, because even when her wandwork failed to come off properly, she could tell you why it didn't work out.
Nita is a "people person" - she reads people fairly well, and is very good at engaging random strangers in conversation. (You never know where your next story will come from!) She's outgoing and confident, and isn't really afraid that a stranger will turn down her questions, because if they do, there are always more people to ask.
Although it works to her disadvantage at times, Nita sees her idealism as a strength. She feels that a dedication to a moral code makes a person good or strong.
Weaknesses: Both magical and personality:Magic-wise, her wandwork is only passable - she was good enough at it pre-OWL, but the NEWT level work was just a bit above her comprehension level. She has trouble focusing over long periods of time, especially once she's lost interest, which is the explanation for many of her grades that slipped between OWL and NEWT level (besides the fact that she was a bit tired of her classes and anxious to get out and try something new, the NEWT coursework required her to focus more than she cared to do).
She can be extremely flighty and jumps from one topic to another without much preamble. Nita can be easily distracted and doesn't always finish what she starts, including topics of conversation - unless, of course, she's interviewing a source, in which case she can focus for hours. (Although the person that she's interviewing might be a bit confused from time to time.) The problem with that is that she'll get a story off to an excellent start, then get distracted by a different story and not quite finish the first one until she's nearly out of time.
It's unfortunate that the focus Nita can have during an interview doesn't carry over to any other branch of her work - Nita is hardly what one could call organized. Her notes are almost always a mess, she's usually looking for the last source for a story at the eleventh hour, she doesn't always remember if she has talked to someone (and if so, what his or her name was, if it's not someone she interviews on a regular basis). It's going to be difficult for her to start in a new place without her old sources, because now she has to learn a whole new group of people - and it will take her far longer than it should. It will be a very awkward couple of months for Nita, because she had settled into a place of being the star rookie reporter at a weekly publication and now is being thrown into a situation with daily deadlines, dealing with people she is not at all familiar with.
For a journalist, Nita is a bit too trusting: she doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut, and she tends to believe that people do have good intentions - she's often rather gullible. But for all her trust, she struggles to maintain very close relationships. She is not at all close to her brothers, can't quite figure out how to be close to her parents, and really only manages to be close to her best friend and fiance - and she rarely allows herself to take any kind of help from them.
Fears: Nita fears that she doesn't have a place - a place in her family, a place in either world. Because of the composition of her family (see below for more on that), Nita has never felt as though she really belonged. She is afraid that she is just an afterthought in her family, and worries that she'll never have the kind of close family relationship that her friends (and her fiance, for sure) have had. She recognizes that she will probably around longer than anyone else in her family and doesn't want her parents or brothers to die and to have had no idea who they were. Family gatherings are one of the few situations in which Nita feels completely out-of-place and uncomfortable, and she's afraid that, in the future when she starts her own family, she won't know how to be close to her children and have them be close to each other.
Nita fears a loss of her freedom. She loves that she travels and gets to explore anything and everything she likes, and for all that she thinks she should to settle down (and really, she does want to as well), the idea of it terrifies her. There is a reason why she's 28, has been dating the same person for six years, and is only now getting engaged - and it's not a fear of commitment. It's a fear that, in getting married, she will lose a piece of who she is.
Nita is also afraid to wrong - not just because she likes to be assured of her opinions, but also because in her profession, a mistake on her part can cost someone dearly and end her career. Nita knows that her errors can unfairly damage the reputation of others and even put them in danger, and she knows she wouldn't be able to live with that on her conscience.
And of course, like any Muggleborn with half a brain, she's definitely afraid of the Death Eaters and of Voldemort - but not quite enough to stop her from questioning what's going on.
History: Nita is the youngest of Donald and Grace Callahan's three children, and by quite a bit (she's 18 and 13 years younger than her brothers), too. Needless to say, her parents were a tad bit surprised by her arrival, as both her brothers were already away at university or boarding school. Because Nita was so much younger than her brothers, she often felt as though she wasn't really a part of that family - like all of the good times had already been had by the time she came along.
Her parents were far more surprised by the Hogwarts letter that showed up the summer after Nita's 11th birthday, as no one in their family had shown any prior signs of magical talent. Because both of her brothers were already grown up and gone before Nita's letter arrived, neither of them is really aware of her magical talent - as far as they're concerned, she went to boarding school at age 11 and is now in the States working as a journalist (which is, of course, true, though they do wonder why they haven't ever seen her work). Nita feels her move to the wizarding world created a rift between her and her parents that permentely ended any possibility of having a close relationship with anyone in her family. She knew it was easier for them to understand law school and business school than for them to understand magic school. Her parents do still love her, and certainly haven't disowned her, but wizardry is simply too much for them to take. School holidays were, at best, uncomfortable affairs, and Nita rarely spent a full holiday break at home, returning early from Christmas and spending much of summer with school friends.
While at Hogwarts, Nita was a prefect (but never head girl) and a Quidditch chaser for three years (but never captain). She loved to be involved in a bit of everything, and was okay with taking a minor leadership role, but in the end preferred to be a part of a team than head it up. She contemplated going into healing, which would have been the magical equivalent of her Muggle mother's career and matched fairly well with her strengths, but eventually decided that she couldn't deal with seeing the interior of a hospital for the rest of her life. Instead, she often takes on assignments about health issues and handles them quite well.
After leaving Hogwarts, Nita wanted to travel and see the world (as well as get out of England), and found that being a journalist would give her those opportunities if she played her cards right. She began as a sports reporter in the UK before finding a similar job in Chicago in 1997, where she met her best friend, Chloe. (After all, American wizards don't just adore Quidditch, they have other pet sports as well!) She took some "continuing education" classes in journalism at Muggle university, which improved her reporting skills immensely and gave her a stronger background in journalistic law and ethics. (Yes, Muggle law is different than magic law, but the principles are similar.) She took a job in New York in 1999, which is where she met her fiance. While in the US, she has developed into a reasonably well-rounded, though still rather young, reporter, capable of handling assignments on most topics. Nita has not been in the journalism world quite long enough to have lost her naivety and idealism - she still believes that ethics and balanced reporting should be of utmost importance.
Physical Description: At the least, provide base details of build, height, eye/hair colour, and complexion. Nita is a bit taller than average (about 5'8"), has a rather athletic build, fair complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair, which is currently cut just past her shoulders and is naturally straight.
Significant Relationships:
Family: Her brother Benjamin's daughter Lia is a 4th year Ravenclaw at Hogwarts, though Nita doesn't realize that her oldest niece is a witch until Christmas 2005. Nita is not at all close to her siblings, and though she tries to stay in contact with her parents, their relationship has always been fairly distant. The Callahan family is not at all close-knit.
Friends: Nita's best friend from the States, Chloe Allen, is a photographer who she met at her previous job at an American wizarding magazine, and Nita will write (and possibly visit) her frequently. Other friendships to be developed over the course of the game, hopefully can find backstory for friends/acquaintences from her Hogwarts days.
Other: Nita has been dating an American wizard, Christopher Rodriguez (Kit), since January of 2000. He is planning to return to England with her, and they will be engaged as of January 1, 2006.
Special Considerations: Such as broom ownership, being an animagus, famous in some form, or a metamorphmagus. All are subject to mod approval.
Nita definitely owns a broom, as she was a Quidditch player during school and still enjoys it. However, she still has her Cleansweep 5, and hasn't upgraded to anything new or better. She may have some recognition as a journalist, but isn't really famous per se.
COMMUNITY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS -- ONLY ANSWER THE SECTION APPLICABLE TO YOUR CHARACTER
Altas:
Prior School: Hogwarts
What house were they in? (Or would they have been in had they gone to Hogwarts?): Ravenclaw
Why were they in that house? (Or why would they have been in that house?): Nita is the curious Ravenclaw more than the ultra-studious one, and is interested in a little bit of everything. She wasn't at the top of every subject, but she was interested in every subject, and loves to learn, explore, and above all, question. The exact traits that make her good at what she does make her an absolute Ravenclaw at heart.
Occupation: Journalist. Currently in between positions, but will soon work at the Daily Prophet.
ROLEPLAY SAMPLE -- PLEASE ENSURE THAT THIS IS IN THIRD PERSON NARRATIVE POINT OF VIEW
Honestly, it had taken Nita a few years to get used to this kind of access. All throughout school (and her family life before that), there were always the things she wasn't supposed to know. The questions she wasn't supposed to ask. The information she wasn't supposed to release.
But by now, it was all old news, she thought, giggling to herself over the pun. Nita quickly opened her bag and removed a thin spiral notebook and a nicely sharpened pencil - quills and parchment had their place, but somehow, Nita couldn't reconcile the magical process of taking notes with her own profession. Some things, she thought, simply made more sense the Muggle way. She flipped open the book, glanced over the list of questions she'd prepared, and gave her subject a friendly smile.
"Okay, all set to begin," she said. "Can you please start by spelling your name for me? I'd hate to get it wrong in print."
MOD-ONLY QUESTIONS -- THESE WILL ONLY BE KNOWN TO THE MODS
Character Secrets: With Nita, what you see is what you get. Though it's not secret and won't be, I feel that the mods should know that while Nita won't be automatically suspicious of the Prophet editor or of others in charge who are "evil," she is very adamant about journalistic ethics and will most certainly react, get upset, and question incidents that don't look like properly balanced reporting. (And as her mun is currently taking mass media law, Nita will have the proper references to back up her opinions!) She knows better than to approach her superiors about things until she's much more settled in, but if she thinks something is a bit fishy, it will go through her thought processes and may also show up in letters to her best friend. She's a good journalist, and to be a good journalist, you have to be intuitive.
Character Alliance: Nita supports Dumbledore and the "light" side, and though she isn't currently an Order member, will likely be trying to report on the "good" stories (or at least the positive ones).
