…which is how they ended up in the cozily aromatic cocoon of the Spice Bazaar. As always the perfume of the shop was more tangible than the curtains and tablecloths.

Jelly wasted no time in acquiring the promised chai and kullarh; the fragrance of the baked earth cup seemed to enhance the tea’s own aroma, a most delicious alchemy. The shop’s proprietor (different than the one seen last visit, Jelly noted warily) had quickly produced the desired ambrosia and delivered it with a miniature array of attractive snacks without being asked. Jelly noted the fast, circumspect service, and the slices of crushed fresh ginger, with obvious approval. Unfortunately, the walla was significantly less discreet about presenting a small, sealed envelope and a pointedly disapproving look.

I mean, the wear and tear on your emotional armor alone can be crippling-not to mention the maintenance costs of keeping your sanity intact ( ... )

Lenore made an amused 'hmm' and smiled back over the top of her tea. There was no real warmth in the gesture. "Those born without the later have to have something," she returned with a slight tilt of the head. Revenge, eh? Well, perhaps it was as good a term for it as any other. Likely accurate, too.

"But having something to prove is an exhausting expense to sustain. I mean, the wear and tear on your emotional armor alone can be crippling-not to mention the maintenance costs of keeping your sanity intact."Her lips pressed into the lines of an indulgent smile, Lenore carefully set her drink down, flicking her eyes back to Ashworth. "You'd be surprised." Sure, it was hard the first few years. After a time you got used to it. Consumed by it? Well, at any rate normal was normal, whatever that term came to mean for a person. Maybe Lenore had already cracked long ago ( ... )
