Apparation class. Brilliant! The whole being seventeen bit hadn't been all it was cracked up to be just yet (aside from some taking advantage of it over hols) but now, now it was going to start paying off. Of course there was its being a status symbol of adulthood, but there was also the obvious point that you had to be able to apparate if you were an Auror- at least Derek figured so. How ridiculous would it be if you couldn't do that? So, in a way this was another step to getting where he wanted to be and that was pretty cool in itself, even if you ignored the fact that apparation was brilliant; far more convenient than having to take the floo everywhere.

Derek peeked inside the Great Hall and then continued in, trying not to be too excited. "So, what do you think," he asked Becca, "first one to splinch themselves loses? Shall I make you do something embarrassing?"

Becca rolled her eyes the moment Derek started to talk to her, knowing what was going to come out of his mouth before he even said it. Well. That's just how it worked when you were best friends with a person. You got to know them so well that things became predictable. It was especially easy with him, because he was too competitive for his own good and always had to make games out of things.

Not that she was complaining, because it was fun... but the thing was that she wasn't competitive like he was! She didn't care who won! For the most part she'd play along to humor him... but she couldn't lie to either -- it was fun to show him up every now and then.

"Sure, but you better start preparing that huge ego of yours now, because you're going to lose. I bet you splinch within the first five minutes," Becca smirked, unsure whether that was true or not, "And what exactly could you have me do that would actually embarrass me? Are you forgetting who I am, Bly?"

Derek smirked. Okay, so he was competitive. Nothing wrong with that right? It was healthy for a bloke to want to win. Besides, Derek was glad he was back in a mood to be a little cocky, even if it was just for fun. "Yeah, we'll see."

He was a little concerned about this splinching business but Derek was equally determined not to worry about it. Making it up to be something horrible would only make it worse. It was no big deal. No reason to be nervous. Apparation was just a spell like anything else. It couldn't be that bad. And hey, if you got a bit separated on the way to getting it down, well, it wasn't like that didn't happen to plenty of people. They could straighten you out again. No big deal. It wasn't going to hurt or anything too terrible yeah?

Hopefully.

"I'm sure I have something," he returned. Becca had a point though, hard to embarrass the shameless. "Childhood photos, stories you've buried away." He nodded seriously ( ... )

No. There was nothing wrong with being competitive. It was part of who he was, so Becky wasn't going to look down on it or judge it. If anything she'd laugh about it. Wait. Yeah, she definitely laughed about it. A lot. Derek was cute when being competitive. Especially when he lost. She might have been a horrible friend who loved to rub things into his face, but come on! He did the same exact thing to her ( ... )
