I do not get it. The guy sang pop songs. Really good ones. He was also a loony and potentially a child abuser, and no amount of catchy pop music makes up for that. And even if he wasn't a molester, even if he was just a weirdo who was too out of touch to understand that he did weird things that seemed inappropriate- he was still just a guy. I read an interesting article which postulated that this is the only "come back" possible for him. Because this is the only way that his artistic legacy is at the forefront and not all of the weirdness and creepy behavior instead. I think the author had a point. It's a fascinating moment in history, but I certainly didn't need to take the day off and watch the memorial on cable. Heh.

I will never understand why famous people are called out to be role models. They are famous. Usually for less than stellar behavior. That does not mean you should let your children model their lives after them. Pay attention and be a parent. Sheesh.

I was living in England when the Queen Mum passed away. She had spent over 70 years dedicating her life to her family and to public service. Yes, she lived in luxury, but she also had to help shepherd her country through WWII while sending her children away to keep them safe. She was pretty much universally loved by the peoples of Great Britain in large part due to her tireless work for charity and her people. She lay in state in Westminster, and the public filed by to pay their respects.

It was still less of a zoo than that mess yesterday.

Granted, the Brits can go overboard too (witness the Princess Di memorial), but they managed to honor someone who has a right to be remembered in the history books with aplomb and decorum.
