In which I use one social media to discuss another

I have three pending Friends Requests in my Facebook inbox.  One is from a girl I knew my whole childhood from Sunday School. I didn't actually like her. We were not friends. Her older sister was outright mean to me. I can't figure out why she would friend me ( Read more... )

What's amazing to me is that people who I thought couldn't stand me in HS keep friending me. It's actually kind of nice to have the notion that we all get over ourselves eventually validated.

I think the most surreal moment was from a woman who I went to HS will who is now a working actress in LA. I noticed that DS9's Robert Hewitt Wolfe had commented on a few of her updates about industry stuff, and my jaw about hit the floor.

Ooh, cool. You know, you're right. I will accept the request from the Sunday School girl. If she remembers me fondly enough to care what I'm up to, why not? I'm still debating about the other two, though.

Pretty much Facebook is all about getting the most amount of friends possible, thereby feeding the ego of the Facebook user. It's like an unofficial contest to see who has the most 'friends'.

I swear to God, if my friend in Thailand didn't just have a baby or my little brother didn't live in England, I would ditch it.

Yeah it is useful for stuff like that- my friend in Macau and I use it more easily than other methods.

Even to garner more numbers- why would you care about the ex-girlfriend of your husband whom you've never met? It's just...bizarre to me. The only temptation to accept is that she probably has pictures of him posted and it would be interesting to see how he turned out.

I purposely left my maiden name out of my profile view just because I don't care about those kinds of people at all. I've encountered plenty of folks from high school or dance that I see are tagged in photos and I feel no need to friend them.

It's happened to me too. I just think, if we haven't exchanged a sentence in 20 years, are we really going to start now? I don't usually friend them back, curmudgeon that I am.

And I am a bit stumped by the ex-boyfriend's wife.

I've pretty much accepted everyone- but I'm stingy about who I ask to befriend me. Fear of rejection, perhaps? Heh.

Most of my list is work colleagues and people from high school! :) I ended up accepting the teacher and the girl from Sunday School, and ignoring the ex-boyfriend's wife. My sister, who actually knew the girl, did accept her invitation and informs me that my erstwhile boyfriend looks exactly the same down to the haircut. So that settles that curiosity, and now I can rest easy.
