Canada, the US and Mexico have a deal (as part of NAFTA) that allows people from one country to get a nonimmigrant visa for another if they are doing one of these specific jobs. For going into the US, it's called TN status; the Canadian Government has their page for getting into Canada. This also be useful.
I've also been told that upon completion of a degree in the US you can get a one-year visa to Canada that lets you live and/or work (I know some have done this); this may or may not be extendable if you get a job, and it may or may not qualify for time required to qualify for permanent residency.
