I am one with the Force and the Force is with me
So this was going to be a straightforward squee post about Rogue One, which we saw yesterday.
I lovedlovedloved it, even though our kids were really ambivalent- they'd never experienced a story where literally none of the protagonists make it out alive. (Heck, I don't think I've ever experienced a narrative like that. Especially in mainstream media.) And yet the theme of Hope resonated so strongly all the way through that it was triumphant nonetheless. Such brave storytelling- I'm still in awe.
I figured K-2SO would survive to tell the tale, much like R2 and 3PO, who have been in every Star Wars film. He/It even points out that if their ship breached in space, he/it would be the only survivor. But it turns out that K-2SO is the first one to die, unflinching and brave to the end. He even gets his own character arc in the film, which is awesome.
I can't believe me, of all people, don't want or need a fix-it fic of any kind. It was such a beautiful and worthy finish, where every character was at peace with dying for something as ephemeral and yet terribly necessary as Hope. I did go and find some great fics though. Honestly, the sheer volume is kind of overwhelming- probably well over 700 fics now on AO3, and the film has been out, what, 12 days? (As a comparison, I think there are 80 or so in the Moana tag ATM.)
