Who? Apparently, another RATMMer. :-)
My beauteous and oft-praised
jungle_goddess and I have just
returned from lovely Bethesda, Maryland. Yesterday, in nearby Rockville, we
were privileged to attend the wedding of RATMM's own "THE" Sheryl Gere to
RATMM's own "Gorgeous" Gary Ehrlich.
It was a lovely service, and began at the large and impressive B'Nai Israel
Congregation synagogue at 3 PM yesterday. And it began on time! That hardly
ever happens. :-)
The processional included Gary's grandfather, Sheryl's parents, Gary's
parents, Gary, the rabbi, the cantor, the chuppah-bearers (it was actually a
fixed structure, so they had an easy job of it), the best man and matron of
honor, and of course, the bride. There were lots of skylights in the
sanctuary, making for a particularly interesting moment when, about ten
minutes into the ceremony, a rather substantial thunderstorm began. Very
cool! And according to Connie, it's supposed to be an omen indicating a long
(as in, a century) marriage.
After the ceremony and recessional, the guests enjoyed drinks and hors
d'oeuvres while waiting for the blood and entrails to be cleaned from the
previous reception. Okay, maybe we were just waiting for them to set up.
After an hour or so, we went to our tables. We were additionally honored to
be sitting with the bride and groom at their table! Yes, table 5 was THE
place to be at this shindig. Naturally, Gary and Sheryl were in the middle
of the usual activities during the reception (a multi-circle hora dance - it
was a Jewish wedding, after all - and the dancing while being carried in the
chairs, etc.). Gary's grandfather, a rather spry 91, cuts a mean rug!
Many of you know that Gary and Sheryl, and many of their friends, are avid
con-goers and filkers. There was a wonderful ancillary benefit accruing from
this fact: at least five (if memory serves) songs and readings in their
honor were performed by their friends. I'll bet that, as much as they
enjoyed the performances, the newlyweds would have enjoyed performing with
their friends, too. Gary's sterling musical heritage was on display as the
prior generation (including the cantor of the service) performed in honor of
the newlyweds.
Dinner was very tasty (chicken, fish and vegetarian selections), with a good
red wine and a very nice, crisp, dry white wine. The band was excellent, and
played songs in a wide range of musical styles. And all of the songs were
wedding appropriate, too! I have heard (most recently, at my cousin's
wedding) some songs that really are better for, shall we say, other
occasions. :-) Table favors were particularly interesting, and included
Wacky Strings (like Silly Strings, but, um, wacky) and poppers. Everyone in
attendance, including us, seemed to have a wonderful time.
Our thanks to Gary, Sheryl and their families for letting us share this very
special day with them.
Please join us in wishing Gary and Sheryl many decades of wedded bliss!
P.S. - All my pictures were awful, unfortunately (this ain't false modesty,
campers - I wish it were!), but I did get two shots that aren't quite as bad
as the others.

Don't they look great (Connie, Sheryl and Gary - not the blurry photos)?
