OOC: Why do people become spies?

May 08, 2006 00:45

Money-
Financial problems such as debt and/or greed for material posessions allow handlers to recruit agents.

Ideology
Belief in their political ideal, believing that their side is bigger and better then the other side's political idea/ideology.

Compromise
Essentially blackmail. Identifying elements in an Agent's lifestyle that could potentially become harmful to their reputation if it was exposed.

Ego
Intellectual flattery or the promise of fame and fortune involving a certain topic. Usually only works with academics.

-Rarely, if ever, do Intelligence operatives actually spy. Most work at an Embassy under some form of offical cover, and are protected legally by diplomatic immunity. Others operate "undercover" while living under an assumed identity. Typically, the people who handle these "agents" are called case officers.
