Here are some tips on using these textures:
1. Set on Screen. You'll notice that the black area will show the layer underneath clearly, while the white area will be semi transparent.
That's how I made this icon. First I cropped the image to fit the black area, then, I used a large version of the image over the white area to give that magazine feel.
2. Cheat and delete. Select the solid colored area with your Magic Wand Tool. Delete. Ta-dah. A fuss free way to get a more interesting icon composition.
