Selective Canon

Being a geek is so much easier when you choose to pretend the crap in certain series never happened and selectively edit them from your memory. In my mind, there was a Highlander movie. It was awesome. I often wonder why they never made a sequel. Star Wars prequels? That would be cool if George Lucas ever made any more movies but he ( Read more... )

Most of Matrix Revolutions didn't happen. Almost none of it in fact (with the exception of Neo strangely waking up in the subway station thing without having jacked in). [Otherwise my wonderful "real" reason for the existence of the Matrix (so that the people on a generation ship can arrive at a far-distant planet with tech skills intact) is trashed. I always meant to run an RPG campaign about this and haven't managed it yet. And, yes, I know I am weird for wanting to keep Matrix Reloaded.]

I can find the good in some things. I find it peculiar that the Star Wars prequels utterly lacked Anakin Skywalker. And it's strange that they didn't really have Laura Palmer's secret biker boyfriend appear in the series, even though he was so prominent in the plot.

You know, the more I think about it... the more I realize that I'm inclined to accept the canon, warts and all.

When I run Amber, I try to include the Merlin series. Even if the game is set before the Merlin series, I will try to make sure it fits with the stuff presented there.

I consider the Star Wars prequels to be part of canon. While I don't agree with Lucas's execution of the films, I'm fine with the expanded setting he created. The comics put out by Dark Horse really help with that acceptance, because they did such a good job with them.

For gaming purposes, if I'm looking to do something specific, I will deviate from the canon. But I don't usually deviate because I disliked it.
