Nolan on Third Batman movie and Superman movie

LA Times Article where Nolan talks about his proposal for a Superman movie (without actually telling us anything) and the third Batman Begins movie.

I liked Batman Begins. I did not really like Dark Knight. Sure, it was a good movie. It just wasn't a good Batman movie.

The problem I have with it comes from the first movie. He is determined to make the series "not comic-booky." While I prefer this to Ang Lee's Hulk trying to put the movie in to comic panels, it isn't true to the source. The Joker in comics is a psychotic with style. The Joker in his movie is just a psychotic. The Batmobile in the comics has usually had things like Batwings on the fins or little bat touches. His Batmobile is just a big blank tank.

The things he finds "comic-booky" is the style of the characters. Take that stuff out, and you lose a lot. I thought Batman Begins was an awesome movie, but I never considered it much of a comic book movie. (For the record, I also have not counted Superman movies as good comic book movies. The Spider-Man movies have done the best I have seen of capturing the feel and look of comics.)

The article refers to the success of Smallville. Is this a sign of where they want to take the movie? Will they take Superman out of the tights? Will he be going around wearing armor or a t-shirt and jeans?

I have one other annoyance with this article, besides the problem of it not saying a damn thing about what was so special about his idea. I am betting it was just the studio saying "His Batman films made us money! He can do all superheroes now!" The other thing that annoys me is the line about Superman not having good villains like Batman and Spider-Man.

I hate this. I hear it all the time. I think the problem is the movies have never showed all of Superman's great villains and the TV shows always made up crappy villains. So, the general public, who does not read the comics, don't know how many great villains Superman has had. The Superman of the comics has one of the best Rogues Galleries. It may not be as good as Batman, but it is hard to compete with that line-up. I do think it is better than Spider-Man's, who really only has Green Goblin, Venom....and a bunch of forgettable villains. Sandman is a cool villain? Really? The Vulture? Come on...
