I think it is a matter that you are potentially making that person's life shorter. The reason we have two kidneys is that they fail easily. If you give your kidney to your child or relative that is seen as a sacrifice. If you give your kidney away for money, what amount is enough? Would we have young 18 year olds selling their kidneys to pay back their college loans? Also you could die from the operation (people die from complications of plastic surgery, I remember a 20 year old from my town that died from liposuction treatment).

Summary: I think it is a matter of "selling organs = risking your life" and we don't want to put a price on your life. Donating organs to family = a sacrifice.

Just my opinion - not neccessarily the answer.

But it just seems like it would be an elective surgery, like plastic surgery, which is also risky because it's a surgery. I am sure they could put a $$ amount on it but it seems that maybe it's more about not being able to regulate the buying and selling of organs. I dunno.

I was also getting annoyed with her because she kept saying it's something a "normal" person would get. I am not abnormal. I am normal. And I don't have skewed morality just because I would like to know the real reason people can't sell their organs. I think it's normal to know that you can't/shouldn't. But not necessarily why. Um, she doesn't even know the real WHY. She just knows inherently you're not "supposed" to.

Also, I would've loved to sell an organ to pay for college. ;)

people don't sell their organs because its expensive to perform the surgery to remove and transplant the organs. i am sure as soon as technology catches up, people will do it. right now, its just not cost viable and thus, a last resort.

So it has nothing to do with ethics!
