Some thoughts on Brüno

So I went to see Brüno. Hearing all of the controversy swirling around it, how could I not? For instance, GLAAD is saying the Sacha Baron Cohen’s film Brüno reinforces "damaging, hurtful stereotypes" and “decreases the public’s comfort with gay people,” while HRC (a group that has been less than satisfactory at doing its job protecting civil rights ( Read more... )

Thanks for posting this. I've been ambivalent about seeing the film, but I'm pleased to learn that you loved it. Based on what I've read on your blog, I think you have sophisticated and progressive politics, and I usually find myself impressed by your take on things. So now maybe I'll see Brüno.

I had a hard time watching Borat because I hate to see people being embarrassed. It was painful to watch at times.

As far as Bruno goes: I haven't seen it yet. And I have no problem with satire or using gay stereotypes to ridicule homophobia....

However, it would be easier to digest if Sacha Baren Cohen weren't straight. There's a part of me that's just completely fed up with straight people employing this trope.
