i gave my last pound to a homeless man today. he was cold, it's winter. he was shivering, covered in tatty rags and torn jackets. he had a dog next to him, lying next to him like a guardian angel. a black lab. the cutest thing i've ever seen, i'm sure. gosh, he was a precious thing. he looked so hungry, too. i just wanted to feed him some roast ( Read more... )

i always take dog food and a sandwich to this one local homeless man, probably twice a week. only becauase of the dog though, and i do tell him everytime that this is the day he has to sort his life out.
it hasnt worked so far and im slowly losing faith that it ever will

That's a lovely thing for you to do. Even if he doesn't sort his life out, I'm sure he'll never forget your act of kindness.

Aww that was really nice of you - I'm sure he will always remember what you did for him.
I never really understand how people get themselves into such a state that they loose everything. I don't understand how someone can have no-one to look out for them. I always feel really sorry for homeless people.
The ones near me, I'm sure, beg for money for alcohol and drugs so no-one tends to give them anything. However if I saw a really sad looking man, like you did, I'd like to think I'd have bought him some food. But then again, do some homeless people hate that? Hate feeling like a charity? =/

I hope so. :)

I know what you mean. I don't actually always feel sorry for them. Sometimes I find them scary, sometimes intimidating, but other times you can't help but let your heart melt when you see them. I generally felt so sad watching this man and his dog, I just had to do something.

I honestly don't believe that homeless people hate feeling like a charity. Most of the homeless here are begging on the street. In all honestly, they make themselves a charity. I'm usually very wary of giving them money, because they very well may spend it on drugs. That's why I'll never give them more than £2 or something, and I pefer giving them food.

Wow. Our bums just tries to kill you or just wants your money to spend on drugs. Oh, we Americans <3

That's sad. :(

At the end of the day though, all homeless people, whether they're drug addicts or not, are all disadvantaged and all need help in one way or another.

Reading this really touched my heart, to be honest. In my town and around my area I see A LOT of homeless people, even homeless families. It's just devastating to think about them. There are SO many families in need here in America because of the economic crisis, and for that I can't blame them for being out on the streets. I never want to make assumptions about homeless people because I don't understand their backgrounds. I don't know the real reasons why they're unable to do anything with their lives ( ... )

:( I know exactly what you mean. But hey, life's hard. I guess that's how we learn.

I always try not to make assumptions about the homeless too, but we all do it. Sometimes it just can't be helped, but sometimes it's good to be proved wrong from your assumptions as well.

Aww.

Thank you, Michelle. I wish I could do more for the homeless as well, but they really need to do things for themselves as well and with people helping them all the time, they'll never learn how to do that.

Yeah, I agree. I imagine homelessness to be such a lonely thing. I think all this man has in the world is his dog, and I find that so saddening.

He wasn't very talkative, no. I mean, he spoke, but sometimes I felt like I was ushering it out of him, that's why after I gave him the soup I thought it best to let him be. Though I'd love to speak to him again.
