Donuts needed to be washed down with milk. However, fetching a glass from the kitchen proved costly.

“Somebody took a bite of my donut!” Don howled. He glared around the dining room.

His mother and father looked up from their scrabble game, but Charlie kept his eyes on his book.

“Well, you shouldn’t have left it unguarded,” Charlie said, shrugging indifferently.

“I was only gone for a minute!” Don snapped at the Most Likely Suspect. He felt like slamming his glass of milk down, but knew that he’d get into trouble if he broke it. He settled for setting it down with a solid thunk as he studied his diminished dessert.

Suddenly, his eyes widened as his brain processed the evidence. “Hey!” he said. “That bite in my donut is too big to have been made by Charlie!” he turned his suspicious glare on his father.

Alan might have been able to bluff his way out of the charge, but his instinctive swipe at his upper lip was all the proof Don and Margaret needed.

“Go back to the donut shop and get him another,” Margaret ordered.

Alan opened his mouth to object, but Margaret glared and he departed quickly.
