He felt the gentle touch of a feminine hand against his shoulder and instantly he jerked, coming awake - struggling to focus his eyes on the person next to him.
“You been here all night?” Megan asked, smiling softly and offering him a cup of coffee.
He rubbed his eyes for a moment then looked around trying to get his bearings. He’d somehow fallen asleep in the chair in the FBI lounge, an open file across his abdomen.
“I couldn’t sleep… thought I could get some work done,” he answered, his voice hoarse and thick with sleep as he accepted the coffee she offered.
“And?” she prodded taking the seat across from him.
“And… ” he began, not wanting to admit he’d fallen asleep looking at Callie’s file even if the evidence was literally against him. “I took another look at the tire print ERT pulled from Callie’s driveway and found it belongs to a Chevy SUV… of which there are about 300,000 in LA county, including those of the FBI,” he sighed, rubbing his eyes again before running his hand over his hair and shifting his position in the chair to stretch his sore muscles.
Megan tilted her head as he moved and then her eyes widened. “You know, Granger… that may be it. Maybe this was an inside job…”
The thought of an FBI agent turned terrorist made Colby’s stomach churn. He remembered too well his time as a triple agent… spying on his fellow agents to uncover a network of moles in the DOJ. It had almost been the death of him. And he had worked hard to put that life behind him. He never wanted to return… but for Callie, he knew he would.
He raised a quizzical eyebrow in Megan’s direction, encouraging her to say more.
