He wipes the sweat from his brow as he continues to focus his gaze on his target… surveying him more from obligation than from interest.
The desert heat is unlike anything he’s ever experienced. It affects him in ways even the hottest day back in Idaho never could. His skin is raw while his lips are dry and cracked despite every effort he’s made to protect himself from the ceaselessly arid surroundings.
His gaze shifts momentarily from the enemy into the sky. He sighs, knowing relief will come soon.
The desert chill is something he understands. It reminds him of home. His eyes scan across the sand as a full moon replaces the blistering sun.
For a moment he imagines he’s back in Idaho. The sand is like snow that falls in winter, lying in a thick blanket. The moonlight catches the tiny crystals and makes the landscape sparkle as though there are millions of stars buried beneath the surface.
His partner in Counter Intelligence shivers in the night and Colby smirks. California boys can’t take the cold… but he welcomes it. It’s the only thing reminding him of a life he has waiting for him, thousands of miles away.
