The words flowed from the doctor’s mouth. He talked about the damage the bullet had done to ribs and soft tissue. He mentioned a lung collapsing. He went on about blood loss and transfusion. But the only words Don wanted to hear was, “Charlie will be fine.”
He could wait no longer. “Is he going to be okay?”
The doctor seemed startled at the interruption. “You were with him, weren’t you?”
“I was. Will he be okay?”
“He’s young. He’s in good health. There is no reason not to expect a full recovery.” The doctor finally smiled. “He’ll be fine.”
