in his bed
It was different, knocking at the door of Don's apartment. Usually they met at the family home in Pasadena, which was closer and most of the time Don spent his evenings there anyway.
Don opened the door, dressed only in sweats and a t-shirt. "Yeah?"
David cleared his throat. Colby looked away. "We've got a case," David said then.
Don gaped. "Why didn't you call?" He opened the door wider, gesturing for them to come inside.
"We tried," Colby replied, following David and Don through the short hallway.
Don scratched his head. "Yeah? Why didn't I pick up?"
Colby snorted. "Right."
Don waved him off. "Seriously. My phone should be on." He turned toward the bedroom and whispered, "Michael?"
Colby raised his eyebrows. David winced. "It's his day off?"
Don nodded. "Doesn't matter. Let me get dressed. I'll be right there."
David nodded and looked around the living room. It didn't look lived in, but it had lost some of its sterile air. Most notably were the take away leftovers on the coffee table and the basketball on the couch. He grabbed a slice of pizza and held the flat box out to Colby.
Colby declined. He took the sound of running water in the bathroom to peek into the bedroom. A blond man was lying spread across the bed, dead to the world. There went his theory about Liz Warner. Two years of working with the man, and he was still a mystery.
"You didn't know?" David asked.
Gauging, Colby heard in the question. He shrugged. "They told me. I said it didn't matter. I just never noticed, you know?"
David nodded. He knew Don kept it quiet at the office. Megan probably knew ten different reasons why Don tried his hand at relationships so determinedly, only to fail and crawl back to being a single man with friends with benefits. David just knew that even Alan sometimes thought that maybe Don shouldn't go looking anymore.
"Michael's a fun guy," he said, suddenly uncomfortable with the silence. He wondered if Colby was as nonchalant about this as he claimed. "Horrible at poker, though," he added casually.
Colby grinned, stepping away from the door - maybe realizing that he was spying. He bent over and grabbed a slice of pizza from the open box. "We should get some food on the way back. Who knows how long tonight's going to keep us."
Don returned then, smartly dressed as always. He was straightening his tie on the go. "Did you find my cell?"
"I wasn't looking," David said between bites.
"Damnit," Don cursed. He turned back into the bedroom and there was rustling. Colby could faintly hear whispered talking before Don came outside and shrugged. "Still with the gun, probably."
"And that's where?" Colby asked.
"On the fridge," Don replied, already on his way. "I was hoping for just one night in, you know?" He retrieved his stuff from the fridge. He looked at Colby, making a face. "Megan would say I left it there subconsciously."
David laughed. "She'd probably be right."
"True," Don admitted. He clipped his gun, badge and cell on his belt. "You guys all done eating our dinner?"
Colby quickly grabbed another slice before getting ready to leave. "Your own fault for making us wait."
Don sighed and ushered them toward the door. "Let's go." He waited until Colby had hit the light in the hallway outside the apartment before turning off the lights inside. He locked the door and turned to follow them. "What have we got, anyway?"

End.
I didn't want this challenge to go by without a single post. =p So there. Also, it's past midnight and I just wrote this. I apologize for any fallacies or errors - and for all the superfluous words, like adjectives and qualifiers and all those funny little crackers.
Michael is the Poker Buddy from the opening scene of episode 1x08: Identity Crisis. I liked him and the casual way in which they introduced him. My brain went "fun!" and here he is. And he wants more.
