[Side Note: I hate to say this (because my speculation on such things usually results in severe disappointment), but Rob Zombie's Halloween remake looks kind of intriguing; I'll see it just because Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, If....) is playing Dr. Loomis.]

By any means necessary, SEE IT IN THE THEATER. numb_boy April 10 2007, 16:28:01 UTC
I haven't been to a drive-in since I was little, and that would be the ideal viewing environment for Grindhouse. Seriously, if you get a chance to see it down in Houston, by all means do so--I have a feeling that, despite the draw of Tarantino, its lengthy run time is going to impair its box office (though, like The Departed, it might sustain itself pretty well for a few weeks, despite limited showtimes), thus forcing it out of theaters to make way for a new Diane Keaton piece of shit. But yes, Grindhouse is something you'll regret not seeing in the theater; much of its fun comes from audience energy and the fact that the films themselves are designed for the imperfections and larger-than-life screen of cinema. (Actually, I'm excited about catching it at least once more before it leaves theaters.)

I think Rodriguez's Planet Terror is my pick, just because it goes all out in capturing the 'grindhouse' spirit (even the sets, costumes, and vehicles evoke a distinctly '70s look); it's over-the-top and wild, totally abandoning ( ... )

Let's say: if you made it through the 'club massacre' scene in Kill Bill, Vol. 1, you should be OK with the violence level--it's similarly over-the-top and absurd, but excessive. Tarantino's segment is more of a chase film--dialog over gore, with a great climactic sequence. Rodriguez (have you seen Sin City? he directed that) is all about action, gore, and being as un-PC as possible; if you have any taste for zombies, great dialog, and wild plot twists, check it out. I'd say the film is worth seeing just due to the fact that (sort of, but not quite) like RHPS, it encourages audience rowdiness, something that you won't be able to replicate on a TV at home.
