Explanations for last night's LOST crowdsourced...

The first recap for last night's episode is up on darkufo, here. As it's author's goal is not to be the deepest but the first, it's a mater-of-fact attempt to tease out the most significant details. Down in the comments though, I found what are now a few of my new favorite theories about the shocking last few minutes of the ep.

1. Desmond ran Locke over to give him OTL memories. Locke's eyes sure had an amazing expression, more than "I just got run over" shock. This was where I started out after seeing the ep.

2. Desmond intended for Locke to be sent to the same hospital where Jack works, so that Jack would get his OTL memories triggered. I looove this theory.

2a. (and I quote the comment in its entirety) maybe Locke will have a moment of suspense when he flatlines at the hospital and Jack will do his well practiced mouth to mouth resuscitation triggering both their memories as they lovingly smooch.

3. Is this particular well similar to the one that the Orchid was built over? It was apparently stated by Zoe that there are 3 energy pockets on the island. (In the scene where she waves that map in front of Jin)

4. The book that Iliana had was "Notes From the Underground" (in Russian, by Dostoevsky), which is about... a man's long imprisonment.

5. The audio bit in the background of the preview for next week was the Willie Wonka crazy monologue from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory right when everyone is entering the psychodelic tunnel on the boat from the 1971 movie.

Good stuff.

So far, in the comments to this one recap, nobody seemed to mention something that I thought jumped out, which is that when Libby and Hurley were on the island, back in season 1 or 2, didn't she say stuff about how she thought she knew him before? This would then be another "previous life" type of memory that might preceed everything we've seen on the show so far! It might be a clue that the OTL is just one of many cycles experienced by these characters. This sounds like just like something I would expect from the writers of the show.

As I was saying to patches023 a couple of nights ago, I also like to imagine a plot scenario in which we learn that the MiB is actually some kind of guardian of the island, is somehow responsible for keeping whatever it is "corked", but he's gotten tired of that responsibility, and can't leave until he somehow defeats Jacob's test about the inherant goodness of humanity. Yeah, it doesn't make enough sense but it would be a neat twist.

Whew, now just to wait for Vozzek's recap for a completely and wildly different set of ideas.
