Hyukjae wasn’t a particularly violent or confrontational person, but he did have a set of principles that he lived by. So when he found Donghae on his knees in front of some Hufflepuff guy he didn’t know, his first instinct was to drag Donghae off of the guy and introduce the guy to his fist.

The crunch as Hyukjae’s knuckles met the guy’s nose was decidedly satisfying.

“What the fuck?!” cried the guy, clutching his face. “What the hell is your problem?”

Hyukjae took out his wand, ignored the intense throbbing in his knuckles, and pointed it towards the Hufflepuff threateningly. “If you don’t scram in the next five seconds, I’ll show you what the hell my problem is,” he snarled. The guy nearly tripped over his own feet in an effort to leave the room. Glower darkening his face, Hyukjae turned back to Donghae, who was wiping his mouth with his sleeve. “Well? What do you have to say?”

Donghae glared at the floor, arms tightly crossed. “I’d say you’re overreacting.”

“Overreacting?” Hyukjae repeated disbelievingly. “I find my fucking boyfriend sucking off some random guy, and you think I’m overreacting?”

Donghae silently burned a hole into the stone floor with his gaze.

“Say something, damn it!”

“You knew what I was like long before we started going out,” Donghae shot back. “It was your risk asking me to be your boyfriend.”

“So you’re saying this is my fault?” demanded Hyukjae incredulously. “Well, for your information, people who are in a relationship do not sleep around like…like some cheap whore!”

Donghae’s head snapped up, eyes meeting Hyukjae’s for the first time. “Are you calling me a whore?”

A warning bell went off in Hyukjae’s head, but the words were tumbling out of his mouth before he could stop himself. “At the rate you’re going, you might as well be. For all I know, you might’ve slept with half of the castle by now.”

Donghae took two strides forward until they were face to face. “You don’t know anything about me,” he hissed vehemently. “And so what if I have? What is it to you?”

Hyukjae pulled back his fist and hit Donghae as hard as he could.

When Donghae didn’t show up for dinner, Hyukjae was too angry to care about his absence or the suspicious looks that Sungmin was throwing him from across the Great Hall.

When Donghae didn’t show up for breakfast the next morning, Hyukjae started to feel a little bothered.

When Donghae didn’t show up for Divination, Hyukjae felt a bit regretful and guilty and more than a little bored (Donghae’s hilarious interpretations of the symbols had been the highlight of the class).

When Donghae didn’t show up for the next three days, Hyukjae started to worry.

“Hyung!” Hyukjae called, dashing down the hall after his first class to catch up with Sungmin.

Sungmin paused and watched expressionlessly as Hyukjae approached him.

“Hyung, have you seen Donghae lately?” asked Hyukjae breathlessly.

Sungmin lifted a shoulder noncommittally.

“Please, hyung,” Hyukjae begged desperately, one step away from getting down on his knees and bowing.

“And why should I tell you anything?” replied Sungmin coldly.

“We- Donghae and I- really need to talk. Please, hyung,” Hyukjae repeated.

Sungmin sighed, turning his eyes upwards. “Let it be known that I don’t actively try to break up couples. Although you two seem to be self-destructing just fine without anyone’s help. Follow me.” Sungmin turned and walked down the hall. “He’s in his room- hasn’t left for three days. I’ll sneak you into the Slytherin dorms so you guys can talk it out; no one else should be there right now since it’s class time.”

“Hyung, you are the most amazing person I’ve ever had the fortune of knowing,” said Hyukjae as they entered the dungeons.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” grumbled Sungmin. “Cover your ears,” he commanded as they reached a portrait.

Hyukjae obediently clapped his hands over his ears. Sungmin uttered the password, and the portrait swung open. Hyukjae followed Sungmin through the door, staring admiringly at the high-class décor of the common room.

“That’s Donghae’s room up there,” said Sungmin, pointing to a staircase.

“Thank you, hyung,” said Hyukjae, making to rush up the stairs.

Sungmin caught Hyukjae’s sleeve. “I have a good idea of what happened between you two and Donghae pretty much deserved the punch you gave him, but if you hit him again, I will not be so forgiving,” Sungmin warned.

Hyukjae let out a wry laugh. “I won’t. I’m just surprised that Heechul hasn’t come for my head yet.”

Sungmin let go of Hyukjae. “Because Donghae didn’t tell him,” he chuckled. “He didn’t want Heechul to dismember you. Despite what it seems, Donghae does care about you.” Sungmin clapped Hyukjae’s shoulder. “At any rate, I need to get going. Good luck.”

Hyukjae did not watch Sungmin leave, but instead took the stairs two at a time. Gathering his courage, Hyukjae opened the door tentatively and peeked in. There Donghae was, lying face down on one of the four corner beds, looking for all the world like he was asleep.

Hyukjae stepped into the room, closing the door gently behind him. He approached the bed cautiously, eyes not leaving Donghae’s figure. Reaching out, Hyukjae softly touched Donghae’s shoulder. “Donghae?”

The reaction was instantaneous. Donghae jerked up and backed away before Hyukjae could blink. He stared incredulously at Hyukjae. Hyukjae did not miss the way his eyes were puffy and his face was blotchy. He noted with no small amount of guilt that there was a rather large, purple-ish bruise gracing Donghae’s left cheekbone.

“Hyukjae?” croaked Donghae, reaching out to touch Hyukjae, only to stop at the last moment. “What are you doing here?”

Hyukjae shrugged, sitting down gingerly on the edge of Donghae’s bed. “I came to see you. Sungmin-hyung,” he added as clarification.

“Oh.” Donghae looked down at his lap.

“Look, Donghae-”

“I’m sorry.”

Hyukjae blinked, startled. “Come again?”

“I’m sorry,” repeated Donghae, glancing up at Hyukjae’s reaction. “I’m sorry about everything. I’m sorry that I wasn’t a good boyfriend. I’m sorry about…what happened. And I didn’t mean what I said. I’ve never slept with anyone; I mostly said that just to get you mad.”

“Well, it worked,” chuckled Hyukjae.

“I’m sorry,” said Donghae. He peeked up at Hyukjae. “It’s just…I’ve never been in a relationship before.”

This was shocking news to Hyukjae. “Never?” asked Hyukjae disbelievingly.

Donghae nodded. “You’re my first relationship,” he confessed. “I mean, I know that’s no excuse for what I did, but everything was just so new and overwhelming and you make me so happy sometimes and it’s really scary, almost like you have some sort of control over me and-”

“Donghae,” Hyukjae cut in. “Do you still like me?”

Donghae stared at Hyukjae for a moment before nodding slightly.

“Good, because I still like you and I want this to work.”

“Even after what I did?” asked Donghae uncertainly.

Hyukjae smiled a bit. “I believe in second chances.” The smile dropped from his face. “But if you do it again…”

“I won’t,” Donghae assured him. He stuck out his pinky. “Pinky promise.” Hyukjae twined his pinky around the proffered digit, and they shook, sealing the promise.

“Okay,” whispered Hyukjae for no reason, suddenly feeling shy. “Donghae? Can I…kiss you?”

Donghae cracked a smile. “Do you even need to ask?” He leaned towards Hyukjae, placed his hands on Hyukjae’s thighs for balance, and pressed their lips together for a sweet, chaste kiss.

“I’m sorry,” Hyukjae apologized when Donghae pulled back. At Donghae’s confused look, Hyukjae brushed his fingers lightly over the bruise on Donghae’s cheek, causing the other boy to flinch in pain.

“It’s alright. I really had that one coming.”

“Still,” Hyukjae insisted. “I shouldn’t have lost my temper like that. Do you want me to heal it for you?”

Donghae shook his head. “It’s alright,” he repeated. “It’ll be a good reminder for me.”

“Are you sure?”

Donghae laughed. “If you’re worried that Heechul-hyung will get you after seeing this, don’t. I’ll tell him I fell down the stairs or something.”

“Somehow, that makes me more worried,” mumbled Hyukjae. “Hey, we should probably get back to class now. You’ve already missed three days and…” He trailed off as he noticed Donghae’s pout.

“And one more day won’t matter much,” asserted Donghae, looking at Hyukjae with wide, beseeching eyes.

“But-”

“Honestly, Hyukjae, what would you rather do- take notes in boring classes for the rest of the day or cuddle with me?”

“We should-”

Donghae scowled ferociously and pinched Hyukjae’s thigh viciously, eliciting a yelp.

“-definitely take a day off,” Hyukjae finished weakly, cursing himself for giving in so easily. But then, Donghae beamed sunnily at him, and Hyukjae kind of melted along with whatever resistance remained.

Hyukjae obediently climbed into Donghae’s bed and pulled the sheets over the both of them. Wrapping his arms around Donghae’s waist, Hyukjae pulled the other boy close, burying his nose in the younger’s hair and inhaling deeply. Ah, bliss, Hyukjae thought as Donghae laughed a little and teasingly bit his collarbone lightly. Hyukjae laid there contentedly until he realized something.

“What if someone comes in?” he asked worriedly. “Won’t they-”

“Hyukjae.”

“Yeah?”

“Shut up.”

“Okay.”
