When I got it, I was told that since I was 17 when I got it that I wouldn't be charged anything for having it, and the guy explicitly told me that I never would be. I tried to get a checking account at Bank of America (I've had my savings at Fleet since well before it turned into BoA) a bit before I turned 18 and they were like "no, you can't even have an atm card unless a parent cosigns" despite the fact that i already had one

Then they told me that for the minimal checking account with a max of 10 transactions for month it would only be free if I direct deposited.

I went to danversbank and still have my BoA savings account. Their ATMs are everywhere and that's free. My checking at danversbank's totally free, I get charged to use ATMs here (Worcester) but the savings account makes me not need to.

Did that make sense? copy me ;)

Hey, you uhhh...you got a little window on your tongue, there.

:-p

Hang in there, Megan! You'll make it through all of this. And yeah, banks suck. Opening a checking account at a different one, maybe something fairly local, is a good idea, though. Free checking accounts do exist, and I heard it's better not to have all of your money at only one bank anyway (lowers the risk of being wiped out in the case of ID theft). It's kind of a pain in the ass, but may very well be worth it.
