This American Life is a fantastic show. Keith and I download it weekly in podcast form, and then save it up to listen to for hours at a time on long road trips -- nothing will make a long drive go by faster than a This American Life marathon They now also have a TV version, but I haven't seen that to say if it's any good or not. It seems like a tv version wouldn't be as intimate as the radio version, but I don't really know.
The format is basically that each episode has a theme, and they invite writers to write about that theme. Sometimes the stories are comedic, sometimes they're retrospective and introspective, sometimes they're journalism, etc. But they all go along with whatever the theme is. Usually there are three stories per episode, but every once in a while there's only one long story (like the "Giant Pool of Money" episode I posted about several weeks ago), and sometimes there are oodles and oodles of really short stories like the one you just heard.
