in answer to your last q: are there any helpful professors you know well at school who could advise you on that? because i have no idea, and in fact have no idea what defender culture is like... and hence am suprised by you not getting responses either.

i think you have to harass those defender folks . they have too much on their plate. in law school i used to be really scared of the harassment makes you seem eager/ annoying border - but i learnt that i comes across as just eager and passionate. people really respond to it , even me. the more you seem interested the more we want you . omg, am i a "we" now?
you are gonna be a kick-ass defender. i have no doubt .!
